Our governor lifted the Stay At Home order, so we pointed the RV west and headed to Moss Landing, which is situated on Monterey Bayā€”midway between Santa Cruz and Carmel. Weā€™ve stayed here before, but this time we went with a gift card in hand (thank you, JP and girls) to try our hand at kayaking in Elkhorn Slough.Ā

The weather gods smiled on us. It was a fine day for paddling. We encountered all sorts of local denizans: harbor seals, sea otters, dignified herons and assorted other birds. We were also treated to an amazing air show when a bi-plane pilot decided to do some mid-air tricks, including several barrel rolls. We couldnā€™t believe our luck.

I apologize for the quality of the video and pics--my phone was inside a waterproof bag. Best $20 I ever spent. Sure beats buying a new phone.šŸ˜€

And if you have nothing better to do, check out this OtterCam.

I know we all share a love of animalsā€”especially our petsā€”and saying goodbye is never easy.

This week we lost our beloved ā€œgranddogā€ Seely. Half Great Pyrenees and half German Shepard, she embodied the best of both breeds. She could ā€œhugā€ like no dog Iā€™ve ever met. And, while sweet and gentle with the children, she loved nothing more than directing her deep, ferocious bark at squirrels, cars, coyotes, and birds passing overhead.

Sadly, on a very rainy day last week, she jumped out of the ATVā€”her favorite place to beā€”and landed wrong. The vet said a predilection for spine issues made the damage too great to come back from. We all loved this dog so much and itā€™s hard to say goodbye, but itā€™s better than watching her suffer.

(The photo is a recent one of Daisy and Seely. Technically, Seely was Daisyā€™s dogā€”a Christmas ā€˜pick-of-the-litterā€™ ten years ago, but we all loved her.)Ā

Last week's Q&A was:Ā Do you read/write poetry? Yes or No?

I really enjoyed your answers. Thanks for the poems you shared, too. Here is one from a reader friend who lives in Saudi Arabia.

My two randomly selected winners this week are:

Linda Hughes
and
Glenda Martillotti

(Linda and Glenda congrats. Please email me your pick of either a $5 Starbucks or a $5 Amazon gift card.)

Q&A

This weekā€™s Question is a bit more light-hearted.Ā Are you doing something ā€œromanticā€ on Valentineā€™s Day? Yes or No?

(Two winners will be chosen by random drawing to receive either a $5 Starbucks gift card or a $5 Amazon gift card. Please reply the usual ways:
email or on my DebraSalonenAuthor Facebook page.)

Stay well, my friends, and happy reading,

Deb

Next week: I have no idea. šŸ˜‰
