Lithuania’s ambitions to combat climate change

The Government has largely supported the integrated draft National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) for the period 2021-2030, laying down Lithuania’s ambitions to combat climate change.

‘The European Union has set itself ambitious targets for a shift towards a climate-neutral economy and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, therefore, the fight against climate change has been and will continue to be one of the most important goals of the Community for many years ahead. The plan approved by the Cabinet of Ministers speaks about our commitment to the planet, to the flora and fauna, to ourselves and to our children and grandchildren’, says Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis.

Lithuania’s Linkevičius echoes Macron’s call to defend international order


Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius echoed French president’s calls not to repeat the tragic pages of history during a three-day Paris Peace Forum, held in in the presence of 30 heads of state.

During the Inauguration of the Forum on Information and Democracy, Linkevičius voiced his concern for the safety of journalists and indicated that Lithuania already has different means to address various forms of disinformation via projects ‘debunk.eu’ or the EU cyber rapid response teams.

Lithuanian MoD wants NATO in on EU defence projects



Lithuanian Defence Minister Raimundas Karoblis said EU defence initiatives should be open to all NATO allies and partners, according to the ministry's press release.

”We have to make sure that flexible rules are provided for third states, especially NATO allies, to take part in PESCO projects,” Karoblis said during a meeting of defence ministers in Brussels.

“Only the participation of NATO allies can ensure the quality of implementation in prioritised PESCO projects, such as military mobility or cybersecurity, and ensure the proper level of cooperation and transparency.”

‘There’s no shooting here’ – Ukrainian children find respite in Lithuanian schools

Over 500 Ukrainian students, many of them from Donbass war zone, are currently studying in Lithuanian schools. Yet, it’s not only the children that need support to integrate and bridge Lithuanian and Ukrainian cultures.

“One child told his teacher that he really likes it here. After being asked why, he said, because there’s no shooting here,” says director of Vilniaus lietuvių namų school in the Lithuanian capital, Gintautas Rudzinskas. The school now hosts 52 children from Ukraine.

A multinational leading provider of integrated risk management solutions, assurance and property services SAI Global has decided to embark on a new journey and open a Centre of Excellence in Lithuania. The new center in Vilnius will be responsible for the software development and associated back-end services, it is going to play a central role in the company’s future growth. Initially, the company plans to hire up to 50 professionals for its Center of Excellence during the next year.

First time in the Baltics: CAS-CERN Accelerator School will be held in Kaunas, Lithuania


The European Organisation for Nuclear Research, known as CERN, together with Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Lithuania is inviting to CAS-CERN Accelerator School next spring. Held in different countries, only 4 schools are being organised by CERN yearly. This will be the first time for the CAS-CERN Accelerator School to be organised in one of the Baltic States.

One school course lasts for two weeks and attracts students from all over the world. Hermann Schmickler, the main CAS-CERN organiser emphasises that the tudents should have certain knowledge before starting the School.

Kindness Takes Over the City: Start of the “Kaunas Full of Kindness” Campaign


The coming Christmas season and the special “Cake Day” celebrated in Lithuania are inspiring for generous actions. Business representatives in Kaunas unite for a new initiative, inviting people to show kindness by donating. In the coming month, efforts will be made to raise funds for a special van with access for the disabled, which is badly needed by volunteers of the Order of Malta who are taking care of the elderly in Kaunas.

Ceremony of the State Funeral of the commanders and participants of the 1863-1864 uprising to be held on 22 November

Gediminas Hill reinforcement works, which began on 3 January 2017,  accidentally unearthed burials. Following the identification of the remains of the participants of the 1863-1864 uprising, executed in Lukiškės Square in Vilnius, the continued search led to the unearthing of the remains of 21 men. It was decided to hold a State Funeral ceremony for the commanders and fighters of the 1863-1864 uprising in cooperation with Poland, in exactly one month, i.e. 22 November. The reburial will take place at the Rasos Cemetery in Vilnius.

Partisan Kentra-Ausra nominated for Freedom Prize


Albinas Kentra-Ausra, a partisan, chronicler of the Lithuanian Atgimimas (Revival) movement and a chevalier of the Order of the Cross of Vytis, has been nominated for the annual Freedom Prize in Lithuania.

The decision was on Thursday made by the Lithuanian Seimas' Freedom Prize Commission.
