How long have you been at DH?
I started at DH, just before the second lockdown in 2021. I can’t remember the month but I did a couple of weeks in the studio, then went online via Zoom until the restrictions were lifted.
How did you start classes with us?
I have always done some sort of dancing over the years, starting with amateur ballet and tap dancing in high school to performing Greek dancing in my 20’s. I had a baby in my 30s and by my 40s I started belly dancing and did that for about 15 years on and off. In my early 50’s I joined a performing Serbian dancing group. The place closed down a few years back and then was on the hunt for something else. DH was recommended to me back in 2020. I always wanted to do tap again and became interested in hip hop. I trialed these two and decided that was what I wanted to do.
Did you have any fears or concerns starting classes at DH?
A definite concern/fear was resuming dance, particularly as tap was many decades ago. Hip Hop interested me, but it was challenging me on so many levels and out of my comfort zone. My age is another factor. Though I can keep up physically, my memory is not what it used to be. I was also concerned how I would be received by other students because of my age. I didn’t know if I would have anything in common with the other students, but I have made friends and it’s the best.
What would you say have been your wins and achievements over this time at Dance Habit?
A definite win is learning about DH and having the opportunity to become part of this community, making new friends and dancing again. I just love it. Getting an award for Empowerment was unexpected and so treasured. I didn’t realise that I did anything that garnered an award, but I feel a great achievement. Empowering, supporting and encouraging is something I strongly believe in.
What keeps you coming back?
The teachers, staff and students keep me coming back. You are all fantastic and encouraging and I feel part of a large, wonderful, eclectic family.
Would you share a precious memory with us?
There are many great memories, but one I remember is when Mon (my Hip Hop teacher) gave me my award for Empowerment. I felt honoured and wondered ‘why me’. Mon said that the team pays attention to the interactions that happen in the community. I didn’t realise that what I had to say have had some impact. I felt empowered that being me had some positive effect.
