Happy February!
We hope that your new year is off to a great (and smoother!) start. This month, we have some great Valentine's Day and Black History Month reads, so be sure to check those out below.
The most notable change that's taken place over the past month was the inauguration, and whichever side of the political spectrum that you land on, we think that we all can agree that Amanda Gorman's poetry recitation (the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history - she's only 22!) was simply stunning. Preorder your copy of the poem (along with Gorman's upcoming children's book!) below.
Wishing you a wonderful February!

10/27/20 - William Morrow - $15.99
A charming, romantic debut novel in which Jane Austen, heralded author, ends up time-traveling almost 200 years in the future. There she finds the love she's written about and the destiny she's dreamed of...but is it worth her legacy?
Bath, England, 1803. At 28, Jane Austen prefers walking and reading to balls and assemblies; she dreams of someday publishing her carefully crafted stories. Already on the shelf and in grave danger of becoming a spinster, Jane goes searching for a radical solution—and as a result, seemingly by accident, time-travels. She lands in...
Bath, England, present day. The film set of Northanger Abbey. Sofia Wentworth is a Hollywood actress starring in a new period film, an attempt to reinvent her flagging career and, secretly, an attempt to reinvent her failing marriage. When Sofia meets Jane, she marvels at the young actress who can’t seem to "break character," even off set. And Jane—acquainting herself with the horseless steel carriages and seriously shocking fashion of the twenty-first century— meets Sofia, a woman unlike anyone she’s ever met before. Then she meets Fred, Sofia’s brother, who has the audacity to be handsome, clever, and kind-hearted.
What happens when Jane, against her better judgement, falls in love with Fred? And when Sofia learns the truth about her new friend Jane? And worst of all, if Jane stays with Fred, will she ever achieve her dream, the one she's now seen come true?

2/16/21 - William Morrow: 2021 - $16.99
Driving home one rainy night, Cassie Larkin sees a man and woman fighting on the side of the road. After calling 911, she makes a split-second decision that will throw her suburban life into chaos. Against the dispatcher’s advice, she gets out of her minivan and confronts the attacker. That’s when he turns on her and spits out a chilling ultimatum: “Let her die, and I’ll let you live.”
A veterinarian trained to heal, Cassie can’t let the woman die. But while she’s examining the unconscious victim, the attacker steals her car. Now he has her name. Her address. And he knows about her children. Though they warn her to be careful, the police assure her that the perpetrator won’t get near her. Cassie isn’t so sure.
The next day—Halloween—her husband disappears while trick-or-treating with their six-year-old daughter. Are these disturbing events a coincidence or the beginning of a horrifying nightmare? Her husband has been growing distant—is it possible he’s become involved with another woman? Is Cassie’s confrontation with the road-side attacker connected to her husband’s disappearance? With these questions swirling in her mind Cassie can trust no one, maybe not even herself. The only thing she knows for sure is that she can’t sit back while the people she loves are in danger.
As she desperately searches for answers, Cassie discovers that nothing is as random as it seems, and that she is more than willing to fight—to go to the most terrifying extremes—to save her family.

2/2/21 - One World: 2021 - $32.00
A chorus of extraordinary voices comes together to tell one of history’s great epics: the four-hundred-year journey of African Americans from 1619 to the present—edited by Ibram X. Kendi, author of How to Be an Antiracist, and Keisha N. Blain, author of Set the World on Fire.
The story begins in 1619—a year before the Mayflower—when the White Lion disgorges “some 20-and-odd Negroes” onto the shores of Virginia, inaugurating the African presence in what would become the United States. It takes us to the present, when African Americans, descendants of those on the White Lion and a thousand other routes to this country, continue a journey defined by inhuman oppression, visionary struggles, stunning achievements, and millions of ordinary lives passing through extraordinary history.
Four Hundred Souls is a unique one-volume “community” history of African Americans. The editors, Ibram X. Kendi and Keisha N. Blain, have assembled ninety brilliant writers, each of whom takes on a five-year period of that four-hundred-year span. The writers explore their periods through a variety of techniques: historical essays, short stories, personal vignettes, and fiery polemics. They approach history from various perspectives: through the eyes of towering historical icons or the untold stories of ordinary people; through places, laws, and objects. While themes of resistance and struggle, of hope and reinvention, course through the book, this collection of diverse pieces from ninety different minds, reflecting ninety different perspectives, fundamentally deconstructs the idea that Africans in America are a monolith—instead it unlocks the startling range of experiences and ideas that have always existed within the community of Blackness.
This is a history that illuminates our past and gives us new ways of thinking about our future, written by the most vital and essential voices of our present.

2/9/21 - Thomas Nelson Publishers: 2021 - $17.99
A riveting story of heroism, heartache, and the power of love to heal all wounds.
Murphy Shepherd is a man with many secrets. He lives alone on an island, tending the grounds of a church with no parishioners, and he’s dedicated his life to rescuing those in peril. But as he mourns the loss of his mentor and friend, Murph himself may be more lost than he realizes.
When he pulls a beautiful woman named Summer out of Florida’s Intracoastal Waterway, Murph’s mission to lay his mentor to rest at the end of the world takes a dangerous turn. Drawn to Summer, and desperate to find her missing daughter, Murph is pulled deeper and deeper into the dark and dangerous world of modern-day slavery.
With help from some unexpected new friends, including a faithful Labrador he plucks from the ocean and an ex-convict named Clay, Murph must race against the clock to locate the girl before he is consumed by the secrets of his past—and the ghosts who tried to bury them.
With Charles Martin’s trademark lyricism and poignant prose, The Water Keeper is at once a tender love story, a heartrending search for freedom, and a reminder that the needs of the one outweigh those of the ninety-nine.

2/9/21 - Ecco: 2021 - $26.99
An achingly beautiful story of female friendship, betrayal, and a mysterious disappearance set in the changing landscape of San Francisco
Teenage Eulabee and her magnetic best friend, Maria Fabiola, own the streets of Sea Cliff, their foggy oceanside San Francisco neighborhood. They know Sea Cliff’s homes and beaches, its hidden corners and eccentric characters—as well as the upscale all-girls’ school they attend. One day, walking to school with friends, they witness a horrible act—or do they? Eulabee and Maria Fabiola vehemently disagree on what happened, and their rupture is followed by Maria Fabiola’s sudden disappearance—a potential kidnapping that shakes the quiet community and threatens to expose unspoken truths.
Suspenseful and poignant, We Run the Tides is Vendela Vida’s masterful portrait of an inimitable place on the brink of radical transformation. Pre–tech boom San Francisco finds its mirror in the changing lives of the teenage girls at the center of this story of innocence lost, the pain of too much freedom, and the struggle to find one’s authentic self. Told with a gimlet eye and great warmth, We Run the Tides is both a gripping mystery and a tribute to the wonders of youth, in all its beauty and confusion.

Every Waking Hour by Joanna Schaffhausen
|
|
The Ellery Hathaway series just gets better and better. If you have not read the previous 3 this is a great place to start. Enough of their background is given so you understand the relationship between police Detective Ellery Hathaway and FBI director Reed Markham, and you do not really need to know that in order to follow their work in figuring out who has kidnapped a 12-year-old child. The end is fabulous especially since it is not really the end. A long-ago unsolved murder that was uncovered during the investigation and thought perhaps connected to the current case is also solved. And boy, what a surprise it was.

The Survivors by Jane Harper
|
|
Jane Harper has once again created a beautifully written character driven novel and mystery. And, once again the location is one of the main characters. This time we are on the Island of Tasmania and the small tourist town of Evelyn Bay. The other characters who have known each other since high school (Kiernan, Maya, Sean, Liam, Ash and Olivia) are still living with the guilt and trauma from a horrible accident the night of the big storm 12 years earlier which resulted in the death of Kiernans older brother and Liams father, and also the disappearance and presumed drowning of Olivias 14 yo sister. When Olivias roommate Bronte is found murdered late one evening on the beach near her home the ensuing police investigation opens many old wounds and slowly starts to unveil what really happened during the big storm. As much as I loved her previous books, I think this was her best so far but then I seem to say that about each new book she writes.

Love and Other Lies by Ben McPherson
|
|
At the beginning, Love and Other Lies was a fast paced typical thriller to read. One which centered on a horrific event the mass killing at a summer camp for teens, and the disappearance of one of the young campers. It was about the relationship between husband and wife, the love they still have for each other after 15 years of marriage and the lies they might be telling, and about their relationships with their teen daughters. Then you begin to realize what might have really happened and it suddenly becomes an extremely thought provoking and unnerving story that could have easily been taken from true events. It shows the horrors that can occur with the rise of white supremacy, and how normal people with the best values can be infected by political ideology. Love and Other Lies is not a feel good story by any means, but it is an important story with lots and lots of topics to discuss and a story that is definitely pertinent to the times in which we live. This is a book that you will think about for a long time after you put it down.

Girl A by Abigail Dean
|
|
Girl A is a beautifully written story that tells of horrible atrocities. It is a story about the slow slide into mental illness/paranoia by Charles Gracie (Girl As father) and how this led to the unimaginable existence that became reality for Lex (Girl A) and her 6 siblings. Dean does an amazing job telling the story from Lexs viewpoint but at the same time showing us how each child (treated by different psychologists and adopted by different parents) lived after escaping the House of Horrors, as their home came to be known. The ultimate psychological drama, it is an in depth look at how a family can deteriorate into the depths of unimaginable horror with no one doing anything to stop it and how each one fares in the aftermath.

The Whisper Network is a novel whose time has definitely come. I loved it and couldnt put it down. It is told first from the perspective of women in general and then in the voice of each of the main characters. It teaches a chilling lesson of how inappropriate actions and words in the work place are often ignored, excused or justified because of pure greed or of potential harm to a career or a friendship. The lives of four women, all in-house lawyers for a large sports apparel company, will never be the same after the company CEO dies suddenly and they find out the general counsel, Ames Garrett, is slated to be promoted to CEO. You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen
|
|
I am speechless. I cannot believe that Greer and Sarah have written a thriller better than their first two combined. Shay is a nice, normal young woman who just cant seem to get a break. She is on her way to the subway one morning and stops and takes time to put her hair up in a ponytail. 22 seconds is all it takes but that is enough for her to arrive at the subway platform just as the train pulls away. It is then that she sees another woman who also just missed the train. As the next train approaches she watches in horror as the woman jumps to her death. 22 seconds is all it takes for Shays nightmare to begin; only she doesnt yet know what a nightmare it will become. You will not be able to put this one down so dont start it until you have time to read it straight through.

One of Gibby's older brothers died in Vietnam, and the other, Jason, came back changed for the worse, though he won't talk about what happened. When Jason is accused of murder, Gibby seems to be the only one convinced he didn't do it and sets out to prove to himself one way or the other. With his signature beautiful writing style, Hart leads readers on a mystery that ends up not being the one you might not have thought it would be, and each twist and reveal brings up new questions to keep the reader engaged in a big way.

There are no limits to what I love to read, however I tend to gravitate to mystery/thriller action stories that are fast paced with lots of twists and turns that keep you guessing all the way to the end. There is nothing I love more than an ending that comes completely out of left field that I never saw coming.

All Fall Down by James Brabazon
|
|
Max McLean is an assassin for the British government, but is so deep off the books, almost nobody knows of his existence. This turns into a major issue when the job he has been sent to do turns bad and the only conclusion he can draw is that it was he himself who was the target. What follows is a non-stop thrill ride of an adventure filled with intrigue and twists that stretches from Ireland to Paris and then Tel Avis to Moscow while Max searches for the truth. Filled with colorful and well developed characters and with more action than a spaghetti western, this one is a can't miss for all thriller/mystery/suspense lovers. An outstanding read!

Devolution: A Firsthand Account of the Rainier Sasquatch Massacre by Max Brooks
|
|
I would never read this book. A Sasquatch Massacre??? Gimme a break. But then I did. Read it that is. I decided, what the heck, I'll give it 5 minutes. And 6 hours later, at 4:00am, Holy Cow! What a story. Forget all about whether or not you believe in Sasquatch or the Yeti, it's not about that. It's about people and relationships and hardship and challenges and survival under life threatening conditions. It's about guts and heart and leadership and weakness and rising to the challenge and wondering 'What would I do?' Spoiler alert, yes, it's a Sasquatch story, but it really isn't. It's a story of humanity and survival. And it's a compelling and engaging read that you will remember long after you read it. And it just might make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up if you're deep in the woods one day and hear a noise you can't explain.

The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey
|
|
What an incredible read, in a book that doesn't fit readily into typical categories. There's some fictional science, but it's not science fiction. I've decided it's a science themed suspense thriller with a literary feel. Evelyn Caldwell is a renowned scientist specializing in cloning. She's brilliant, beautiful and laser focused on her career. Her husband Nathan has just left her for another woman. When Evelyn goes to meet and confront the other woman, imagine her surprise when she is met by a mirror image of herself. Clearly, the other woman, Martine, is a product of her own research, yet how she came to be is a mystery. When Nathan ends up dead, Evelyn and Martine team up in an uneasy alliance to protect their own secrets and futures. What follows is a fast paced and complex story that is told with perception and nuance around relationships and betrayals, sacrifice and commitments and ultimately love and dedication. I highly recommend this book.

Slough House by Mick Herron
|
|
For those of you unfamiliar with Mick Herron's series of novels of Slough House, you are doing yourself a great disservice. Slough House is where British Secret Service agents who have fallen from grace with the head office are sent to be forgotten. Despite this, the rag-tag group of spies manages to embroil themselves into a series of adventures and misadventures. Slough House is led by Jackson Lamb, whom Herron has built into one of the most iconic characters in the genre. To try to describe Lamb would be a great injustice, you simply have to experience him through the acerbic wit of Herron as described in this series. In this latest novel of Slough House, the team has been targeted by Russian assassins after having been (mis?)-identified as a secret British international hit team who may have been responsible for the killing of a Russian agent in Moscow. The story is compelling and action packed as we join with the Slough House team in a race for survival. To truly enjoy this one, I recommend you go back to the first (of 7) in this series, Slow Horses, and read them from beginning. Mick Herron is extraordinarily gifted in wrapping a contemporary gritty spy novel around a band of misfit agents in an often hilarious way. The magic comes from the empathy and familial closeness you will quickly begin to feel for the Slough House team, and the pulse-quickening feeling you get as the tension builds in seeing how the team can survive against their foes both foreign and domestic.

I enjoy nonfiction the most: biographies, true crime, sociology, and civil rights narratives to name a few. When I read fiction, I choose historical novels or literary fiction most often.

The Dutch House by Ann Patchett
|
|
In The Dutch House, Patchett explores how a place can actually change your life. Maeve and Danny grow up in the Dutch House and are eventually exiled. The reasons why haunt them for the rest of their lives. It is only when they realize that the house has always been there for them that they can go on with their lives. Patchett creates believable characters with believable flaws that you won't forget for a long time.

The Kitchen Front by Jennifer Ryan
|
|
This is a history of life during WWII in England, but told from the standpoint of the women at home, who are on a different type front line. Audrey is a widow struggling to keep her home and feed her children, Gwen is her estranged sister and the Lady of the local manor, Nell is a kitchen maid and Zelda is a disgraced aspiring chef. These women have absolutely nothing in common, other than all are entered into a wartime cooking contest where the prize is a job on The Kitchen Front radio show. During the minor food and supplies shortages we have experienced in 2020 many have found interesting substitutes. We have experienced nothing compared to these women. What unfolds is a powerful story of resilience, creativity, and love in the most unlikely places. A wonderful story of life in WWII and the strength of women under pressure.
