What’s the story? The children of a once famous artist hire a forger to complete some unfinished, long ago abandoned canvases so they'll have an inheritance when he dies.

Why should I care? The film was directed by Steven Soderbergh, who has been fairly busy of late. He had Black Bag come out last year and Presence the year before. He's been making a film a year for about a decade now. The Christophers premiered at Tribeca and drew a strong critical response.

Anything notable? Soderbergh is known for constantly shifting between studio projects and small, experimental indies. The Christophers is a definitive return to a more intimate, ensemble driven style of indie filmmaking.

Head or Tails?

What’s it about? After a deadly rodeo and a stolen kiss, Rosa and her cowboy lover flee across the Italian wilderness, pursued by Buffalo Bill and the story he refuses to rewrite.

Why should I care? Heads or Tails? premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was selected for the Un Certain Regard section, one of the festival’s key platforms for bold, emerging voices in international cinema. The film has continued to build momentum with additional festival screenings and strong critical response.

Anything else notable? The film is directed by the duo Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppis, who previously broke out with The Tale of King Crab, a previous Cannes Directors’ Fortnight selection.

Exit 8

What’s it about? A man becomes increasingly desperate when he realizes he is trapped in a subway station, needing to complete a mission to get out.

Why should I care? Exit 8, which is based on the 2023 video game, premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and became one of the more talked-about genre titles of the lineup. It went on to screen at many festivals, including Sitges, Melbourne, Toronto, Busan and more.

Anything else notable? The film is directed by Genki Kawamura, who is actually best known as the producer behind global hits like Your Name. Exit 8 continues his transition into directing, bringing his experience with high-concept storytelling into a more contained, experimental indie framework.

Festival of the Week

Florida Film Festival

Florida Film Festival takes place April 10 - 19 in Orlando this year. The festival is notable, as its an Oscar-qualifying festival for short films and has become a key showcase for both American and international indie cinema.

Notable films screening this year include Fantasy Life, the breakout indie debut from Matthew Shear, Micro Budget, an award-winning comedy that’s built strong festival momentum, and Slanted, the SXSW Grand Jury Prize–winning satire — highlighting the festival’s mix of emerging voices and critically acclaimed indie standouts.

Bottle Rocket

It’s the 30th anniversary of Bottle Rocket, now streaming on all major platforms.

Bottle Rocket was the debut film for Wes Anderson and was also the breakout film for Owen Wilson and Luke Wilson. The film was made on a modest budget and expanded from one of Anderson's short films. The film would launch his career, setting up his next films Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums and then The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

Synopsis: Three friends plan to pull off a simple robbery and go on the run.
