Today's Bible Study Lesson
“God
Foretells Redemption”
Aim: Understand that
God’s
mission for the people of
Israel is to show all people the way to God;
Celebrate
that
all
people who serve God are included in God’s promises;
and Tell
others
about God’s
never-ending love and salvation for all people.
Background:
Isaiah 49:1-17
Bible Lesson:
Isaiah
49:1-11
“Thus
saith the LORD, In an acceptable time have I heard thee, and in a day
of salvation have I helped thee: and I will preserve thee, and give
thee for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause
to inherit the desolate heritages;” Isaiah
49:8 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
In the Book of Isaiah, the
Prophet writes about
Israel’s Babylonian captivity. They
suffer 70 years of
oppression in Babylon
before
God allows a remnant of the people of Israel to return to Jerusalem.
Instead of God’s chosen people exerting godly influence upon their
Babylonian captors
as intended by God, they adopted the pagan customs of their captors.
Isaiah speaks
to their punishment for such ungodly behavior. However, in our Bible
Study today, God inspires Isaiah to “offer hope and help with the
promise of the Messiah’s coming.”
-
Isaiah
49:1-7,
The Servant’s Call and Mission: Chapter
49 opens
with an urgent call
for all to listen
to this prophesy. This call
is to not only the people of Israel, but the Gentiles as well. The
prophesy regarding the Messiah, who is on many occasions called a
Servant, came with a
mission from God. Before
Jesus
came
into the
world as the God-man,
an angel announced the Messiah’s name to
Joseph. The
words of the Messiah are
compared to a two edged
sword cutting going in and coming out. Those who heard the Messiah
speak
marveled at His words and exclaimed that He spoke with authority as
none other. The Messiah was hidden in plain view until His appointed
time. God’s plan was to
use the people of Israel as
His chosen nation
to bring other nations to Himself.
This mission
intensified with the Messiah’s movements among the people as
He brought Glory to God. Many rejected the Messiah’s
message and personage. The
Israelites not only rejected the Messiah, but they
also rejected
the prophets sent by God.
Rejection
and mistreatment could cause
one to feel useless
and defeated; however, the prophets did their best and left the
results in the hands
of the Lord. They trusted
God for their approval,
not man.
At Jesus’ baptism (Luke 3:22)
and on the Mount
of
Transfiguration
(Matthew 17:5) God
verbally expressed pleasure with the Messiah and gave full
endorsement, with
the words “ … in
thee I am well pleased!” and “Hear
ye him!” The Messiah came to make known the Father and to bring
salvation not only to the people
of Israel, but also to the
Gentiles. This was God’s
Plan from the foundation of the world. Even though the Messiah was
rejected, a time will come when all, kings, queens, princes, those
great and small will
recognize Jesus Christ
as Lord and Savior.
-
Isaiah
49:8-11,
The Servant Saves and Restores: In
His perfect timing, God provides salvation for those who believe
through Jesus Christ. This salvation restores
for a believer
a right relationship with God. All
of mankind are
imprisoned by sin can
be freed if one accepts Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Likewise,
the Gospel of Jesus Christ brings
light to those who are in the darkness of sin. Those who hunger and
thirst for righteousness will be fed and their thirst quenched by
the Word of God and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Even though
humankind does not deserve God’s mercy, He will grant it. To those
who seek Him God will provide
protection from Satan’s fiery darts and ruthless attacks. For
those seeking Him, God
will remove mountains and
valleys that might
prevent them
from receiving the Blessings of God’s gift of abundant
and eternal life. This
gift is promised
to all those
who accept Jesus Christ. Jesus
Christ the Messiah brings about this miraculous work in the life of
all those who
believe and trust
in Him.
Take
Aways:
-
Just
like Isaiah’s prophesy promised the Messiah’s redemption for the
people of Israel, it is available to believers today.
-
Our
responsibility as Christians is to
share
the Gospel to others without the expectation of approval
or reward
from any other source than God Himself.
-
We
as Christians must give
encouragement
to
those who have been
given the
gift of
sharing
the Gospel through teaching and preaching.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“But
you [are] a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His
own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who
called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;”
1 Peter
2:9 NKJV
“Not
so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be
your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and
to give his life as a ransom for many."” Mark
10:43-45 NIV
“I
am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall
go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh not, but for to
steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have
life, and that they might have [it] more abundantly.” John
10:9-10 KJV
“"let
it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the
name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised
from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. ...
"Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name
under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."”
Acts
4:10, 12 NKJV
“Wherefore
God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above
every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of
[things] in heaven, and [things] in earth, and [things] under the
earth; And [that] every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ [is]
Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians
2:9-11 KJV
