"Hear then the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet such a person has no root, but endures only for a while, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediatley falls away. As for what was sown among the thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing.
But as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundred-fold, in another sixty, and in another thirty."
(Matthew 13. 1-23)

Message from Fr. Mike for Sunday, July 16 |
|
|
|
To the Parishioners of St. Philip Neri Parish, sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints –
“Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ”.
I’m doing OK, Lord … Isn’t that enough?
God in his Love made us like himself – in his “image and likeness” he made us. Isn’t that enough?
God in his Love called us his chosen People – to pay him homage, respect, and acknowledgement. Isn’t that enough?
God in his Love sent us his Son – who suffered, died, and rose to new life. Isn’t that enough?
God in his Love gave us this command – “If you wish to be my disciple, take up your cross and follow me.” Isn’t that enough?
No, it isn’t enough!
To go “deeper” means not only to take up m my cross and follow, I too, must die to myself and to all that which does not make me fully human, fully myself.
To reach into my “depths” and become perfect/holy … now, that’s enough!
Because … God is good … all the time!
Praise be Jesus Christ … and Mary Immaculate
St. Philip Neri … pray for us
St. Eugene de Mazenod … pray for us
St. Kateri Tekakwitha … pray for us
God is good … all the time.
Fr. Mike Dechant OMI

A Prayer for Ukraine
God of peace and justice, we pray for the people of Ukraine today. We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons. We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow, that your spirit of comfort would draw near to them. We pray for those with power over war or peace, for wisdom, discernment and compassion to guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for all your precious children at risk and in fear that you would hold and protect them. We pray in the name of Jesus the Prince of Peace. Amen.

Hi Everyone!
We are now in full summer mode, as we enjoy a slower, more relaxed pace, more time outside, and long, lovely days and evenings. Some of us are enjoying the wide variety of amazing local summer activities in and around our fair city, while others are venturing to the lake or on vacations to further reaches. Enjoy every day! While we have had to put up with some rather smokey days, our weather over-all has been steadily warm and pleasant! Our farmer friends, however, are starting to look to the skies for some rain for their young crops and, in some areas, are in combat mode trying to deal with an onslaught of pesky grasshoppers! If it's not one thing, it's another! Please keep all those who grow food for the world, and their needs, in your prayers.
Now, let's see what's coming up in our Parish and around our Diocese for the rest of July and beyond:
- Our Refugee Committee has a revised list of items needed for our Refugee families. Please check out the new and shorter list directly below.
- A reminder - if you haven't picked up your Parish Pictorial Directory yet, please stop by the Parish Office during office hours and grab yours as soon as possible.
- If you are retired and would like to "grow in wisdom", please check out the opportunity below called "Growing in Wisdom: Seeking Deeper Generativity". It's a bit of a committment but it sounds well worth the effort!
- A reminder that we will be sending out only two Parish Newsletters per month over the summer (on July 14 & 28 and on August 11 & 25). Don't worry, we will still keep you well-informed and up-to-date as the summer unfolds!
- Are you, or someone you know, interested in becoming Catholic? If so, check out the invitation below from from Sr. Cindy and our RCIA Program. Sessions will be starting up in late September.
- For the month of July, we are collecting canned vegetables and whole grain cereals for the Food Bank. Thank you for continuing to fill our bin for the hungry folks in our Saskatoon community! Check out more details below.
- The next Bereavement Support group will be on Tuesday, July 18, from 1-3 pm. Please scroll down for more information.
- Check out this week's Church Chuckle! Prime church seating!
- As far as some Diocesan announcements go:
- Mark your calendars! The World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly is coming up NEXT Sunday, July 23. Scroll down below to see how you can honour this beloved, wise group of folks who are so important to our families, communities, and to our society!
- Looking for a nice new piece of art? The Diocese is having a regular silent auction called "Art Auctions for a Cause". Read all the details below.
- Looking for a really amazing camp experience for your kids from Kindergarden to Grade 6? Check out Camp Compassion, a four-day Day Camp being held over at Queen's House in August. Talk about helping our kids learn about how to be compassionate people while having a blast doing fun activities with others!
- A reminder about the two August Ignite Summer Camps for our youth lead by the FacetoFace group! Check out all the cool details down below and get your kids registered soon!
- The Summer Pilgrimages continue! Please see below for all the remaining pilgrimages coming up in July and August, down below, in blue.
- Don't forget that the CWL Clothing Depot is always looking for a wide variety of items! If you are decluttering or downsizing, this is the place to donate the clothing and items you are no longer using. Gift these items to someone else who can make good use of them! More details are below.
- Save the date! The Grow Hope Field Day, out at Bruno, is happening on Sun. Aug. 13. Scroll down below to meet the farmers involved with this important event and for more details.
- Finally, please keep in mind that the Queen's House Retreat and Renewal Centre offers SO many faith-building programs and retreats that are open to all of us. New ones are being added all the time. Please click on the button I have provided below to see what they might have coming up that could meet your sprititual development needs.
Note: The next Parish Newsletter will be on weekend of July 29/30.
That's it for this week! Big Rider home-game this Saturday against the Stampeders! In spite of a number of injuries, could we dig deep enough to get the W and improve our record to 4-1? Cheer loud to keep the drive alive! Have a great weekend, everyone, and talk to you in a couple of weeks!
Glorious Summer Blessings,
Marlene

Growing in Wisdom: Seeking Deeper Generativity -
A Queen's House Program
Here is a very interesting Queen's House program coming up that many of our parishioners may be interested in. It is called Growing in Wisdom: Seeking Deeper Generativity -Two Years of Learning and Exploring for Those Seeking a Spirituality for their Wisdom Years. It will be offered from September 2023 to June 2025 through Queen’s House, and can be found online at : www.growinginwisdom.ca.
Growing in Wisdom is an ecumenical, two-year program, designed for those who are retired, and are curious and interested in exploring the spirituality of aging. The program is rooted in the Forest Dwelling Program created by Fr. Ron Rolheiser OMI, grounded in the mystical Christian Tradition, open to learning from other interfaith and spiritual traditions, and designed for those seeking to engage in their maturing years with wisdom and grace. It is a program that welcomes participants who have the time, interest, and energy to engage in a dynamic two-year adventure of learning and exploration. This is a time in which we can begin to look back on the life we have lived and find openness to new or previously undeveloped inner vistas. It is a time to begin to come to terms with our own mortality and the grace we find in facing this part of our lives with wisdom and satisfaction. This two-year program, offered on Zoom to welcome people from across Canada and beyond, is a dynamic interplay between and among each participant, the Growing in Wisdom Community, and Divine Mystery, assisting in the inner transformation of participants as the journey unfolds.
We held a free 3-hour session in late June, and a recording of this information session can be found on the home page of our website. If you might be interested in a program like this one, please visit our website - you can register through our website found above or below. There are 64 people who are just completing this program, coming from across Canada and the US, and they are saying that the program has been life-changing for them – they are deeply grateful for the experience. The registration deadline for this program is September 1.

World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly
Sunday, July 23
World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly will be celebrated by the Catholic Church on Sunday, July 23. The theme this year is “His mercy is from age to age” (Luke 1:50), which raises the relational interconnection between the old and the young. The theme is especially fitting in light of the upcoming World Youth Day in Lisbon, which will take place from Aug. 1-6, 2023. Pope Francis inaugurated this World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly three years ago, calling for it to be celebrated each year in July, on a Sunday near the July 26 feast day of St. Joachim and St. Anne, the grandparents of Jesus.
Ideas for the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly:
- Watch and share this 30-second video, found at: https://youtu.be/XZTn7V-tkbk
- Explore supporting resources for social media on the CCCB website at: www.cccb.ca/faith-moral-issues/family-and-life/grandparents-and-the-elderly/
- Organize visits or special events to promote the role of the elderly and grandparents.

Donations will be gratefully accepted when dropped off at the Depot at 619 20th St. W. Please use the back door.
New drop-off hours are 10 am to 3 pm, Monday to Friday. Again, we are asking for volunteers to work at the Depot. Please call Bea, at (306) 242-5042 to set up a time. We look forward to meeting you!
Note: Donations may also be dropped off here at St. Philip Neri Parish, in the large bin on the LEFT hand side (under the coat rack), as you come into the Welcome Area. Thank you for all your wonderful donations, all year round!

NEW: "Grow Hope Field Day" at Bruno
Save the date - Sun. Aug. 13!
Grow Hope Saskatchewan will hold a 2023 Field Day in conjunction with the Bruno Cherry Festival on Sunday, Aug. 13. There will be a booth set up to celebrate the growing season and provide opportunities to learn more about the work being done by abroad. In addition, there will be an opportunity to meet one of the Grow Hope farming families in the Bruno area and tour acres of land donated to help feed those in need around the world. Join the fun of the Bruno Cherry Festival in Bruno, SK., and witness the solidarity of Grow Hope farmers, staff, volunteers, and donors teaming up to help raise money to feed hungry people in the Global South and to improve long-term food security. Grow Hope invites participation through sponsorship of a partial acre, a full acre or multiple acres, to cover the input costs of $350/acre. There is a potential to reap proceeds of up to $500 from the sale of the Grow Hope crops grown by participating farm families (this in turn has been matched 4:1 through the Canadian Foodgrains Bank’s partnership with Global Affairs Canada). For more information or to donate, click on the button below, or contact Myron Rogal at (306) 659-5841 or mrogal@rcdos.ca.
