In scripture, the meaning of a name can tell you a lot about a specific person or the character of the person.
Similarly, the Lord’s name is meant to carry the identity, character and actions of God.
The Bible tells us to call upon the name of the Lord as a means of help and comfort.
Romans 10:13 says, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
And Jeremiah 33:3 instructs, “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’
God’s name tells us who He is. He is God, the Creator and Ruler of everything! He is above everything else in all the earth. He is more powerful and more wise than anyone.
God’s name tells us about His character. We learn in Scripture that God is faithful, merciful, loving and strong. His presence is a place of protection for all who follow Him.
Proverbs 18:10 says, “The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” God’s name also tells us about His actions.
Daniel 6:27 says, “He rescues and he saves; he performs signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth. He has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions.”
He rescues and saves His children. He fights for the weak and He provides for those in need. All of these incredible traits are wrapped up in the name of the Lord.
To God Be The Glory! As the gospel songwriter so beautifully penned in “Something Happens”…. “When I call upon Your name, the very atmosphere will have to change. We’ll be transformed. We’ll never be the same. By the power of Your Holy Name! Jesus! Something special Supernatural About your name!”
When we call upon His name, we are trusting and believing that God is who He says He is. There is power in His name!

"Hope For A New Day: How Do We Hold Onto Hope In Difficult Circumstances?" Haggai 2:23; Zechariah 4:1-14
Lesson
Nugget:
In
today's lesson, the prophets Haggai and Zechariah were instruments of God in urging the people to cling to Hope for a New Day which God would bring about for them, even after their disobedience, if they repented and again sought His Will.
Do
we as Christians cling to the Hope of a New Day which will be brought about by God in His own time?

Pleasant Green Historic Highlight
A respected community and religious leader in civil rights initiatives, Historic Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church was often the site and gathering place of peaceful civil rights rallies and demonstrations. One March in particular centered around Jim Crow laws.
The abolition of slavery enacted by the 13th Amendment did not guarantee racial equity in the United States. In fact, legalized racial inequity continued through the “separate but equal” Jim Crow laws. The term “Jim Crow” comes from a popular white actor, Thomas Dartmouth Rice, who created a fictional character by that same name. He played a clumsy, dimwitted, African American slave by donning a black face and performing jokes and songs in a stereotypical slave dialect. It was wildly popular among whites and became a widespread derogatory term for African Americans.
Jim Crow laws enforced segregation in all public facilities, so even though African Americans were not enslaved, these laws ensured a system of economic, educational, and social disadvantages for African Americans.
Most states had their own set of Jim Crow laws. Kentucky’s Jim Crow laws included…*Interracial marriages, cohabitation, and intimate relations were outlawed.*It was unlawful for an African American child to attend a white school, and vice-versa. *In 1948, African American physicians were not allowed to take postgraduate courses in public hospitals. *All forms of public transportation were segregated - railway cars, streetcars, and buses.*In 1932, the state of Kentucky determined that no person or business was allowed to rent an apartment in an apartment complex or other housing buildings to a person who differs in race from the other occupants. *In 1951, interracial adoptions were banned.

Name: Beverly Jean Briscoe-Bowman
Current Focus: I
am focused on my health. I had a serious surgery on April 3rd, 2025.
My body is still healing.
Career: I retired
September 2009 from Verizon. I was a long distance and directory
assistance telephone operator. After retirement, I continued to work
in my calling as a baby-sitter.
Why this Career?:
Verizon was my job. Childcare is my spiritual assignment. I’ve been
baby-sitting since I was 14. I learned from my mother. When I was
an operator, baby-sitting seemed to others like it was my “hobby.”
I knew it was my purpose. I love children! I know GOD trusted me to
care for them. When people found out that I baby-sat, they would
come to me and say “Ms. Beverly, will you keep my baby?” Of
course I said, “Yes!” Not one baby did I turn away. You don’t
turn parents down when they need help and childcare is your gift. You
give them the love GOD has given you. Our children aren’t just the
ones we birth. They are also the infants we care for, the babies we
look after, the children we nurture, the teens we encourage and the
young adults we motivate to keep on keeping on! Our children need us.
Their parents need us too!
At some point,
our own parents will need us. I cared for mine after I retired. What
a sacred experience! My parents were married 75 years when my mother
became ill. I became my mother’s “caregiver” on June 28th,
2020. She passed on August 4th, 2020. Then my father came to live
with me. He passed on March 18th, 2025. He left my home but not my
heart.
My parents
attended different houses of worship. The same GOD was LORD of their
home.. GOD was their perfect caregiver! HE taught them how to care
for their marriage and their family. I love and miss my parents. I
know I will see them again.
What do you want
your church family to know about you?: I love the Lord with all my
heart and soul. My parents and grandparents brought me to church as
an infant. I did the same with mine. I love my children. I show them
respect. You have to respect your children. You can’t do just
anything in front of your children and expect them to respect you.
And you must teach them to respect GOD. That respect is learned at
home and at church.
I was reared in
the church. I have seen its change. Everything must change. Yet the
WORD of GOD remains the same! Scriptures instruct us to train our
children in the way they should go. We train them together at church.
As a child I was
so involved in the church. So were my peers. If GOD gave you the
gift to sing, you were encouraged in such a way that you wanted to
sing! You had an expectation of yourself to keep singing, no matter
your age – children’s choir, youth choir, young adult choir,
senior choir. The seniors of the church were always there for the
young ladies and the young men. Young people contributed Biblically
sound ideas and elders supported them. Working for JESUS and
worshipping HIM didn’t have a minimum age requirement. 😊 And
there was no retirement. 😊I still believe that to be true!
Our gifts and
talents do have seasons. I want to use mine while I have them. If I
don’t use what the LORD has given me, I’ll lose it. I know this
to be true! I used to love to play the piano. When I was 18, I
played piano for Mt. Gilead. I played occasionally at Pleasant Green!
The piano was comforting for me. I played when I had things on my
mind. I practiced at 2am.😊 I stopped playing while rearing my
children. Now I can’t play nearly as well as I once did. What a
loss!
Now I relax by
reading a book. Being with a book is my happy place. It has been that
way since I was an itty bitty girl. I love all genres. I also like
to take long walks. These walks are my time with the LORD. The hymn
is true! HE walks with me and He talks with me and HE tells me I am
His own.
Sometimes I took
Princess on walks with me. Princess was my German Shepherd. She was
special. All of GOD’s creations are special. All are part of HIS
plan. Even the rocks can praise HIM!
Is there anything
special your church can do for you? Holy! Holy! Holy! LORD GOD
ALMIGHTY! Remember when we used to sing that? Our GOD is holy. Let’s
teach our children this truth by being their example. Let’s show
our children how to block out worldly distractions during worship.
Let’s show them how to respect the sanctuary. We can do so by
entering the church filled and ready to spend time together with our
LORD. Oh, what a privilege to praise HIM together with awe and
reverence.
What do you want
your church family to know about GOD?: If you want to please GOD,
then love your neighbor. GOD loves each of us. My daddy spoke to
everybody. Sometimes a young person would walk by him and not return
a greeting. My father would say, “What is wrong with that child?”
I saw my Daddy treat people fairly. If my earthly father was no
respecter of person, imagine our Heavenly Father! GOD is not
clique-ish. Despite our imperfections and differences, GOD created
all of us in HIS image. And HE commands us to love each other.

Deacon Richard Briscoe and the late Sis. Cora Fender Briscoe

FLU
Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.
Flu shots are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding a flu vaccination.
RSV
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common, contagious virus that usually causes mild symptoms. In older adults and adults with certain underlying conditions, RSV can cause severe infections.
RSV shots are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding a RSV vaccination.
COVID-19
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any age.
The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the disease and how the virus spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by staying at least 1 metre apart from others, wearing a properly fitted mask, and washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently. Get vaccinated when it’s your turn and follow local guidance.
The virus can spread from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe. These particles range from larger respiratory droplets to smaller aerosols. It is important to practice respiratory etiquette, for example by coughing into a flexed elbow, and to stay home and self-isolate until you recover if you feel unwell.
Both COVID vaccines and Booster COVID vaccines are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding COVID vaccinations.

VOL.
16 COMMON SENSE REVISITED 3
“AMERICA…UH…THE
BEAUTIFUL?!?
IN VOL. 13 THE ANCIENT GREEKS CALLED THE MUSE OF HISTORY CLIO.
CHRISTIANS SHOULD CALL THAT MUSE GOD! YES, GOD WHO “REMEMBERS
(HISTORY) THAT WE (HIS CREATION ARE DUST.” THAT DUST THAT HE, THE
ETERNAL MUSE OF EVERYTHING LOVINGLY SCOOPED UP AND FORMED MANKIND
INTO HIS, OWN IMAGE, THUS OUR HISTORY BEGAN.
THE LORD INSPIRED
A CALL FOR AN INTERMISSION IN OUR RECANTATION OF OUR DIASPORIC EXODUS
JOURNEY IN NORTH AMERICA.
AN INTERMISSION
IS A PAUSE OR BREAK USED, FOR EXAMPLE, IN LONG BROADWAY PLAYS BETWEEN
ACTS. DURING THAT BREAK MANY PEOPLE STAND AND STRETCH THEIR LEGS. AND
MANY PEOPLE TAKE THAT TIME TO REFLECT DEEPLY ON WHAT THEY THINK ABOUT
WHAT THEY ARE GLEANING FROM THE PLAY.
IN THE VOL. 13 OF
COMMON SENSE REVISITED INTERMISSION THE LORD LED US TO GIVE A SHORT
EMPHASIS AND REFLECTION ON AFRICAN HISTORY AND CULTURE. THERE IS MUCH
MORE INFORMATION PERTAINING TO OUR NATIVE LAND AND OUR ORDEAL AT THE
HANDS OF EUROPEANS. A HORRENDOUS PERIOD OF BLATANT EXPLOITATION OF
BLACK PEOPLE.
WHEN I TAUGHT
THIS ASPECT OF BLACK HISTORY, I ENTITLED THIS PARTICULAR UNIT, “THE
DELIBERATE INTERRUPTION OF AFRICAN CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE EARLY
16TH CENTURY.
IT WAS DURING
THIS ERA THAT, WE THE DESCENDANTS OF AFRICA WERE FORCEFULLY SEPARATED
FROM OUR NATIVE HOMELAND AND SCATTERED THROUGHOUT CONTINENTAL AMERICA
FROM 1619-1865.
IN VOL. 14 THE
HOLY SPIRIT MOVED US FURTHER AND INSPIRED ME TO TITLE AND SUBTITLE
THAT INSTALLMENT, “BEFORE COLOR PREJUDICE…GOD SHED HIS GRACE ON
WE AS WELL! BUT THEN!” THE “BUT THEN” BEING FROM THE WHENCE
WE’VE COME, TO WHERE THEY RELEGATED US TO BE!
WE EMANATED/CAME
FROM A RICH AND RESPECTED ANCIENT BLACK PAST UNTIL THE NEFARIOUS
INTRUSION OF THOSE INVADERS SEEKING WEALTH AT ALL COST ENSLAVED US.
SHROUDING US WITH THE CONUNDRUM/ (CONFUSING, INTRICATE, DIFFICULT TO
SOLVE PROBLEMS) OF RACIAL PREJUDICE THAT WE, AS A RACE OF PEOPLE ARE
STILL GRAPPLING WITH EVEN NOW.
PLEASE PONDER THE
FOLLOWING RESEARCH THAT I HAVE STUDIED FOR OVER 56 YEARS AS WE MOVE
FORWARD WHICH EXPLAINS WHAT HAPPENED TO US:
The interruption
of African cultural development between 1619 and 1865 was a profound,
systemic process that involved the forced removal of approximately
12.5 million people (with 10.7 million surviving the Middle Passage)
(these estimations are not absolute…my premise is that they are not
accurate I think they are much higher) from their homes, dismantling
traditional social, economic, and political structures in Africa.
This era,
characterized by the Trans-Atlantic slave trade and chattel slavery
in colonial America, disrupted the transmission of language,
religion, and community structures.
The Key Aspects
of Cultural Interruption (1619–1865) are:
The
destabilization in Africa to disrupt the positive development of
black culture: The demand for enslaved people by European powers
fueled violence, warfare, and the collapse of local economies. The
removal of young, able-bodied individuals—the demographic backbone
of black society—severely hampered technological, agricultural, and
intellectual development.
The Middle
Passage (the expression they used to name the slave ship and the
cruel inhumane journey from Africa to North America) and Erasure of
the positive development of black lives and cultures: The Middle
Passage across the Atlantic was designed to break the spirit and
cultural ties of captives. Languages were silenced, names were
changed, and, in many cases, traditional clothing and items were
stripped away.
Systemic Erasure in the Americas (which the slavers justified as a
legitimate means to their economic end): Upon arrival, enslaved
Africans were forced to abandon their native languages and customs to
accept being subordinated by a dominant, oppressive culture. Cultural
practices were considered as being illegal or subversive, forcing
expressions of identity underground (TCB’N).
Disruption of
Family and Social Cultural Structures: Slavery in the US
frequently separated family members through sale, preventing the
passing down of African traditions, stories, and kinship structures.
In short, “THE DELIBERATE INTERRUPTION OF AFRICAN CULTURAL
DEVELOPMENT!” Done so for the expressed purpose of economic
exploitation.
Suppression of
Religion: Traditional African spiritual practices were often
banned, leading to the forced adoption of Christianity (without even
considering that there were black Christians during the period that
was, “Before Color Prejudice.
Resilience and Adaptation can be
considered God’s providential care plan to cope with systemic evil,
as per Genesis 50:20 and 2Kings 20:19
“As for you, you
thought evil against me (us), but God meant it for good,
to bring about that many people should be kept alive (by divine TCB’N
given by God), as they are this day.”
“Then said Hezekiah to Isaiah,
The word of the Lord you have spoken is good. For he
thought, is it not good, if [all this evil is meant for the
future and] peace and security shall be in my days?”
Despite
this malevolent interruption, African culture was not entirely erased
but rather transformed by circumstances beyond our control. Enslaved
people developed and renewed African, cultural forms blending the
African, with the European, and Indigenous elements in music, food,
and religion. Resistance also took the form of supporting cultural
practices in secret, such as through whispered prayers, coded songs,
and dance…to God be the Glory…
AMEN!!!

REVISITED…
