The Shreve community in rural Wayne County has a long history dating back to the early 19th century. However, since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the small town has experienced its fair share of difficulties.
In light of these challenging times, the Shreve Community Development Corporation (SCDC) was established to help revitalize the community and improve the quality of life for its residents. Though it has only been in existence for a little over a year, the organization is well on its way to making a significant impact.
From its inception, communication has been a key goal of the SCDC. In order to achieve this, the organization has launched a website, created a newsletter and organized a community events calendar. The website provides an online space for communication and information sharing, while the newsletter and events calendar help to keep residents up-to-date on community news and happenings.
The SCDC has also been working with the WEDC to establish a Community Reinvestment Area (CRA) in downtown Shreve. The CRA will offer tax incentives for making improvements to residential, commercial and retail properties within the designated area. This is expected to help attract new businesses and encourage growth and investment. The application process for the CRA is expected to be complete by fall, at which point the CRA will officially be instated.
Another exciting project that is on the horizon is the restoration of Shreve Lake. Over the last year, the SCDC worked with another local organization and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to secure $500,000 for an engineering re-design on Shreve Lake. The project is set to start after funding has been finalized.
In just a short amount of time, these initiatives have given the Shreve community a breath of fresh air and residents have found a new sense of pride and ownership. The future of Shreve is in great hands with Mayor Hendershott, Village Council and the SCDC!
