MSU Team Engineers New Ventilator Design

Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, and his team - technician Paul Sandherr, and doctoral students Joseph Kerwin and Suhas Vidhate - created an experimental mechanical ventilator using parts costing around $200. He said the low-cost prototype – the first of its kind – can be assembled with high volume, in-stock materials and without advanced engineering training. Mejia-Alvarez hopes the project alleviates developing world concerns about medical equipment shortages.

Working From Home With Help!

To brighten everyone's week, DER is going to feature staff working from home with their furry friends who assist them! This week meet Dennis and his three dogs: Lucy, a 4 year old Black Lab from a chicken coop in Pinconning, June Bug, a 3 year old Boston Terrier, and their newest dog as of last weekend, an 11 week old Toy Fox Terrier named Sunny. June Bug and Sunny will be 4H dog projects for Dennis's sons. Lucy had both her knees replaced and is now retired from 4H. Lucy needs to earn $2 per day to pay for all her surgeries, and every day Dennis asks, "Lucy, are you worth $2 today?" and she wags her big, coffee table-clearing tail, and earns it every day by being a Very Good Girl.

If you would like to nominate a faculty member and their pets (or yourself!), email gatesmax@msu.edu

This seminar is an overview of the Effort Reporting system at MSU. Meghan Cartwright will discuss why we have effort reports, who needs an effort report, and then look at the system to better understand how to certify an effort report. Additionally, she will talk about Committed Effort versus Committed Cost Share with a look at how these percentages are determined.
