DOMINIC WEST APPOINTED AS AMBASSADOR FOR JULIAN HOUSE ON WORLD HOMELESSNESS DAY |
|
Julian House has announced the appointment of renowned actor Dominic West as its new ambassador. The announcement came in time for World Homelessness Day, marking a significant moment in the charity’s ongoing efforts to support individuals affected by homelessness and social exclusion.
West, best known for his roles in The Wire and The Crown, has previously supported Julian House by donating food from his local farm to its emergency shelter for rough sleepers in Bath. West recently visited the emergency shelter on Manvers Street and one of Julian House’s refuges for survivors of domestic violence. During these visits, he was able to get to know the clients to understand their experiences and stories and learn more about the support they receive at Julian House.
Commenting on his new role, Dominic West said: "I find homelessness a particularly emotive subject and I have worked for a homelessness charity in Dublin. I moved to Bath five years ago and its not the sort of place you would expect to see the problem of homelessness, so it is rather shocking seeing the extent of the issue in a prosperous place like Bath. I think the shock of that and seeing what great work Julian House does, made me want to do something to help if I can."

You'll love our marvellous October magazine which features a collection of great reading by our team of wonderful writers as well as beautifully presented advertising by Bath's best businesses.
This month we've embraced the mystery and magic of Halloween. Caleb Ferrari tells us the story of writer Angela Carter’s time in Bath, the doyenne of dark, gothic-themed literature. We also, believe it or not, secured an interview with a self-confessed vampire, Nik Jovcic-Sas. Dame Siân Phillips also spoke to us about her performance in Table Number Seven, part of a Terence Rattigan double bill at the Theatre Royal. There's a celebration of Bath Philharmonia's 25 years, news of a spectacular sound and light experience at the Abbey, and a host of ideas for stand-out interiors and a rich directory of contacts providing inspiration and practical solutions for the home.
Every month we deliver 15,000 copies door to door, but if you don't get a copy at home then you can pick up a copy at many places around town and from our floor stands at: Waitrose, Sainsbury's [Green Park], M&S Foods in Twerton, Tesco in Weston Village, and at The Holburne Museum.

Beef Stroganoff
Juicy strips of seared steak in a creamy mushroom gravy: Beef Stroganoff is a classic dish for very good reason – and it moves from stovetop to table in less than 20 minutes.
Ingredients (serves 4)
200ml beef stock 250ml soured cream (or crème fraîche) 2 thick sirloin steaks (around 300g each), trimmed of excess fat 100g butter 2 large shallots, peeled and sliced 200g chestnut mushrooms, sliced 1 clove of garlic, peeled and crushed 2 tsp smoked paprika 2 tbsp red wine vinegar 1 tsp English or Dijon mustard Small bunch of fresh parsley, chopped
To serve: steamed rice or hot, buttered tagliatelle
Method
Whisk the stock and all but 2-3 tbsp of the soured cream (or crème fraîche) together. Set to one side.
Use a rolling pin (and a bit of brute force!) to flatten the steaks to around 1cm thick and season generously. Heat 50g of the butter in a non-stick frying pan. When the pan is really hot and the butter starts to foam, add the steaks and sear for around 1-2 minutes on each side, until golden brown. Remove from the pan and set to one side on a plate.
Heat the remaining 50g butter in the pan. Add the shallots and sauté for around 5 minutes, or until just starting to caramelise. Add the mushrooms and continue to sauté for another 5-6 minutes or until the mushrooms are golden, adding the garlic and smoked paprika for the last 1-2 minutes.
Add the red wine vinegar to the pan and simmer for 1 minute. Turn the heat down and add the creamy stock. Heat through (stirring continuously) without allowing the sauce to simmer. Season to taste, then add the mustard and most of the parsley.
Add any steak juices that have collected on the steak plate to the pan, then slice the steaks into thick slices against the grain. Add the steak slices to the sauce in the pan and heat through.
Serve immediately on beds of steamed rice or hot, buttered tagliatelle, scattered with the remaining fresh parsley.

The French are immensely proud of their heritage and with a winemaking history stretching back over 2000 years this is hardly a surprise.

Curated by Daniel McCabe
HÅNDVÆRK is a Danish magazine profiling craftspeople, artisans, makers and industry communicators in contemporary Scandinavian craft and design. We think HÅNDVÆRK is a terrific resource for hobbyists or small makers who want to transition from working in the garden shed to a dedicated light industrial environment. It’s not a trade magazine with technical information but rather a collection of successful case studies providing practical advice, guidance and inspiration for those who feel they could turn a skill or interest into a satisfying day job. The latest issue looks at people working with wood, including a violin maker, a basketweaver, a cask maker and a craftsman who makes unconventional furniture out of waste materials. | £20

LIGHT SHOW | SHINING AT THE ABBEY
|
|
|
|
Shine On – Luxmuralis at Bath Abbey until 26 October |
|
Shine On at Bath Abbey, involving dynamic light projections and original musical compositions, is an experience to savour. Created by Luxmuralis, this is a collaboration between sculptor and artist Peter Walker and composer David Harper who together specialise in immersive fine art, light and sound installations.
Visitors enter in 15-minute slots following the cycle of the installation. Taking advantage of the Abbey’s flexible Nave seating, selected chairs are spaced out randomly. Some people choose to sit cross-legged in the Nave, taking advantage of the eco-friendly underfloor heating, or simply lie back taking it all in. The projections and audio come in two sections, the second with specific imagery of the architecture and windows of Bath Abbey. The scenes encompass rich tapestries of colour, majoring in majestic purples, blues and reds, spreading themselves over the Great East Window of the Abbey, which tells the story of Jesus; populating the fan-vaulted ceiling with its rib vaults; and animating the carved stone arches along the Nave. It is all-encompassing. We see kaleidoscopes of abstract colours, stars, Latin manuscripts and figures including St George, King Arthur and King Alfred. It is a way of connecting with the Abbey in a new way and a chance to slow your mind down while being enveloped by the ever-changing audio and images.
In Peter Walker’s words, “We like to say ‘we create the stained glass windows of our time’. By this we mean we’re bringing stories to life with light and colour in just the way that ecclesiastical windows used to do. This use of energetic, visual storytelling makes it really, really engaging, but is also really accessible.”
Shine On – Luxmuralis is at Bath Abbey until 26 October. Book your time slot here: bathabbey.org

Shakespeare Live: The Prince & The Knave 22 & 23 October, 8pm
The Prince and the Knave takes extracts from Shakespeare’s Henry IV parts 1 and 2 to tell the story of the tortuous relationship between Prince Hal, the future Henry V, and the down-at-heel knight Sir John Falstaff. In his inimitable style, Shakespeare mingles comedy, drama and pathos in the tale of the young prince coming of age and at last finding his destiny, while the boastful, blustering Falstaff follows haplessly in his wake.
Shakespeare Live’s team of actors take multiple roles as they bring to the stage the varied cast of characters who cross paths with this ill-assorted pair as their story unfolds. The scene moves from the seedy streets and taverns of London, across highways and battlefields, to reach the final denouement at the court of the newly-crowned King Henry V.
