Gabby DiBacco is a name many of you may remember from your inbox. As the former Communications Specialist in the Marketing Department, Gabby was the previous creative mind behind the newsletters that landed in your mailbox each week. Now, I have the privilege of sharing her inspiring journey and celebrating her incredible accomplishments.
Gabby truly believes that everything happens for a reason. During her time at UConn, she majored in Marketing and minored in Communications, building the foundation for her career as an Account Manager at Otis Elevator Co.
Gabby didn’t start her college career at UConn. She transferred from the University of Alabama, and the moment she arrived, she knew she had to take advantage of every opportunity ahead of her. UConn became a place where she could build a community and make the most of every experience. Her role as Communications Specialist marked a turning point, giving her the chance to work closely with faculty and staff in a professional capacity, an opportunity she credits with changing the trajectory of her time at UConn.
When Professor Bill Ryan approached Gabby about reviving a student sales club, she didn’t hesitate. She embraced the challenge, leading to the creation of the Professional Sales Society (PSS), a student organization that thrives to this day. As the founding President of PSS, Gabby considers it an honor that Professor Ryan trusted her with building what has become a strong sales community on campus.
Gabby’s summer internship at Otis in 2023 left a lasting impact. For her, the most memorable part of the experience was the people, the connections she made, and the support she felt early in her career. Now, as an Account Manager, that same sense of community remains central to her work. Gabby’s role keeps her on her toes, with no two days the same. One day might be spent in the office responding to emails, sending proposals, and calling customers. The next, she might be in the field wearing a hard hat and work boots, surveying elevator units alongside a mechanic. Gabby thrives in this dynamic environment and stays grounded by using a daily “To-Do list” with realistic goals to keep her organized and focused.
When it comes to advice, Gabby emphasizes the importance of confidence and meaningful networking. “As an intern or in the early stages of your career, you’ll meet many high-level professionals. Don’t be afraid to start a conversation. Confidence is key in marketing yourself to future employers. More often than not, they want to connect with you as much as you want to connect with them.”
Gabby shares that “Every rejection is a redirection. It may feel like the world is ending and you can’t go on, but life keeps moving, and you’ll emerge stronger, wiser, and better for it.”
Gabby, thank you for sharing your inspiring story. Your contributions to the Marketing Department and the legacy you left at UConn continue to make a difference. It’s amazing to see how you’ve carried the opportunities you created at UConn into your thriving career at Otis.
