Protests were reported this afternoon, on Tuesday 27 April, in the Ijora area of Lagos by motorcyclists (know as Okoda riders in Nigeria) and other transport workers.
The protesters were demonstrating against the Lagos State Task Force activities, after the latter impounded approximately 2,000 motorcycles in a security operation on Sunday 25 and Monday 26 April. The Commissioner for Transportation indicated that the operation was a result of lawlessness among the motorcycle riders and noted that the authorities will keep conducting such operations.
In a separate incident, on Monday, motorcyclists and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers also held protests over ticketing issues. The protesters clashed with the police officers resulting in the death of one person. See our Security Alert on the incident.
Such protests are likely to cause transport and business disruptions.
