JOJO CORVÄIÁ AT KALPA

We are welcoming a new extraordinary artist into the family of KALPA. The American visual artist, born in Venezuela and based in Berlin, with a background in architecture and design, Jojo Corväiá shifted his artistic medium to ceramics and clay in 2017, gravitating towards the concepts of loss, fracture, and unexpected circumstances in his research. Working with ceramics and bronze and highlighting the values of imperfection and inner beauty, he creates unique and dramatic vessels; aspects of his work include roughness, irregularity and appreciation for the natural process of expression.

Most of Jojo Corväiá's artworks exhibited at KALPA are ceramic, featuring such various materials as volcanic sand, yellow, white and Japanese clays and exploring the ideas of freedom of instinctiveness and the irregularity of form. In his technique, the artist recognizes and embraces the anomalies arising from the process of hand-building, which add uniqueness and beauty and a particular character to his work, establishing an intimate relationship with the material. Indeed his main tools are his hands. He uses no electric wheel and creates pieces as they were produced the X Century B.C.

Marc Ricourt

Using the local wood from Dijon, Marc initially turned on a traditional lathe and then intricately carved and treated the surfaces through bleaching, dying or an application of ferrous oxide. In his long-time research, he has been experimenting with dried out firewood taken from the heart of the tree, to create highly textured rugged surfaces that heighten the sculptural aspect of his work.

Guillem Nadal

The textural consistency of Guillem's paintings - his characteristic monochromatism - as well as the bold streaks stretching out across the canvas, are reminiscent of both raw material and sculptural work. Kate Windibank

Searching for the most intriguing sense of balance and contrast, strength and fragility, Kate creates forms in ceramic with undulating edges, fault lines and fissures. During the multiple firings, the oxides embedded in clay are drawn to the surface, reacting with the glaze to create movement and texture on the internal and external surfaces of the vessels.

Marco Bellini

Spanning vases, recipients, vessels, caves, mounds and wombs, his work encompasses ideas of melancholy, forlornness and solitude. As in the case of this vase in European walnut, in his artist process, Bellini exposes his pieces to sandblasting and oxides, exasperating its effects and allowing such natural elements to design the flow of lines, defects and colours.
