After ten successful editions over the last ten years, AFCA Arts Center has the honor to launch the 11th edition of Hakawy International Arts Festival for Children which will be running from the 2nd to the 9th of November 2021 across 3 governorates in Egypt. In Cairo from the 2nd to the 6th of November, the festival takes place at Tahrir Cultural Center - Home of the festival & Goethe-Institut Cairo in Bustan. We are happy to also have a touring program in Alexandria at the French Institute on the 2nd of November and in El-Minya at Jesuit cultural center on the 8th and 9th of November 2021.
Hakawy International Arts Festival for Children organized by AFCA Arts Center was founded in 2011. Each year the festival brings international and local performances designed for children from around the world and presents them in a vibrant one-week-long festival with the aim of educating and entertaining Egyptian children and their families through arts and culture.
After the Covid-19 pandemic brought the world to a standstill, AFCA turned the situation around and looked for means to help Egyptian artists during the pandemic. We worked with international collaborators on producing international shows to be performed by local artists.
In this year’s program, we shift the focus on early years, which is the most important for child development with an interactive performance Archipel by ACTA company from France that explores the musicality of early childhood, along with 9 Egyptian performances in different art forms such as (object theater, physical theater, interactive theater, music & singing, science & magic, and storytelling). Children will get to experience the magic of science in a labyrinth in The chamber of Secrets by Marina Girgis, appreciate friendship bonds in Gimme Please! an Egyptian remount by AFCA in cooperation with Paperboats, the University of Texas at Austin, and Alliance theater. They will understand animals’ welfare in the play Forgotten Tale.. Animals’ Lawsuit Against Humanity by ACT, dance to the rhythm of the music of Sohbet el Semsemya and sit down for an afternoon storytime in Stories on 4 Wheels, the mobile library of Misr El Kheir. They will also have a special music day with the choir of Association of Upper Egypt for Education and Development - AUEED & Al Nour Wal Amal orchestra. We are also happy to launch a theater experience for children on the autism spectrum disorder - ASD, the first of its kind in Egypt. And last, but not least, children who participated in AFCA Arts School out of Cairo will showcase their talents in the storytelling performance Stories from El-Minya.
This edition wouldn't have come to light without the support of our partners; the Ministry of Culture in Egypt, the Embassy of The United States of America, the British Council in Egypt, the French Institute in Egypt, The European Union, The European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC), Goethe-Institut Cairo and in cooperation with Misr El Kheir Foundation.
