Art. Fiction. Nonfiction. Poetry

Dear Writer,

Need feedback on your manuscript?

Mud Season Review is once again offering its full manuscript reviews. Although we've closed this drive to nonfiction, we are still accepting fiction and poetry. The feedback is designed to help you prepare your work for submission to agents, contests, and publishers.

Submit your manuscript through our Submittable page as a Full Manuscript Review, with payment of the $350 fee. Please include with the title page a one-paragraph summary of your project and provide any direction you would like to give us regarding the type of feedback you are hoping for, and when you would ideally have it by. Typically we can provide it within a month or two. If your book isn't ready right now, attach a file with the project summary; you can send the manuscript later as a docx or pdf to editor@mudseasonreview.com. (We ask that you send it by August 31, 2020. See our FAQ below.)

Our all-volunteer staff is dedicated to bringing great literature to life through Mud Season Review. It's our passion. The fees for this service will help us to cover the costs of our website and Submittable, and to continue to pay contributors.

If you have questions that aren’t answered by the FAQ below, reply to this email and we’ll respond promptly. Thanks for your support!

Yours,
Erin Post, Managing Editor

FAQ:

What does this review consist of?

We provide comments in the margins as well as a written letter of 700-1,500 words. We'll focus on elements of craft, from the arc of a narrative or poetry collection to sentence style and line breaks. Our goal is to help you see your own work clearly.

How long before I receive my review?

Editors will arrange a return date that is mutually satisfactory. In the past this has been one to two months from submission of the manuscript.

Who does the reviewing?

A member of the Mud Season Review staff will be assigned to your manuscript, and one of our editors will oversee each review. To ensure we match you with the best editor for your needs, please include in your email a short paragraph summation of your project and your goals.

Is there a word count or page limit?

Yes. Fiction and nonfiction manuscripts are limited to 110,000 words. Poetry manuscripts can be no more than 80 pages.

When do I need to make my contribution?

You must submit payment by midnight EST on June 30th, 2020. We encourage you to do this as soon as possible, before we reach our manuscript limit for this review period. If you submit payment after we've reached our limit, we will refund it and put you on a waitlist should additional spots open up.

Do I have to send you my manuscript by June 30th?

No. You can send payment by June 30th and send us your manuscript later. To ensure that we have the time to review your manuscript, we request that you submit it no later than August 31st, 2020.

Why don't you offer this all the time?

We put a lot of effort into reading your work. Doing this all year would take away from our work editing Mud Season Review itself, so we budget our time accordingly. In the past we have been able to offer this service twice a year, in December and June.

How do I submit my manuscript?

You can submit your manuscript, along with your payment, on our website. Submit your manuscript now

Will I be satisfied with the feedback?

We work hard to make sure you are satisfied. Reviewers will respond to any follow-up questions, chat by phone or Skype if desired, and generally ensure you get the type of feedback you are looking for. Be sure to specify upfront any areas you would like them to focus on.
