CSW68: Director's Reflections

Director Carlien Scheele, together with Marusa Gortnar (Head of Research and Policy Support) attended CSW68 bringing an EU perspective with the agency’s evidence on gender equality.

CSW is the UN's largest annual gathering on gender equality and women's empowerment. It brings together government officials, civil society organisations, experts, and activists from around the world. The aim: to agree on actions and investments that eradicate poverty and advance gender equality.

In this live newsfeed we get an overview of the outcomes of the various side-events attended and direct commitments made by high representatives and ministers.

Today's choices, tomorrow's consequences

In a recent informal meeting with European Gender Equality Ministers under the Belgian Presidency, Director Carlien Scheele presented a vision of what gender equality could look like in 2030 – if we already put ourselves there.

With the strong current of trends such as digitalisation, the changing nature of work and climate change impacting the future of gender equality, the paths chosen now will shape and strengthen our near future. Read the full speech here

Two years: more support for women fleeing the war

It’s been two years since Russia invaded Ukraine. And women fleeing the war need more support.

EIGE recently published a new report: “Women fleeing the war: Access to sexual and reproductive healthcare in the European Union under the Temporary Protection Directive" where several gaps were identified in the healthcare aspects of the Directive.

The report comes with recommendations to strengthen protection measures for women and girls fleeing Russia's war in Ukraine – and from any war. Read the full report here

Gender dimensions: Digital Services Act

We contributed to a public consultation on the design of transparency reports under the Digital Services Act (DSA)!

The Agency's gender-based violence experts stressed that the gendered dimension of risks associated with online violence need to be captured.

Take illegal or harmful speech for example. There is a high prevalence of online gender-based hate speech - thus the gender dimension should be included in the measurement instruments of the DSA.

From STEM to sustainability

There will be around 29 million jobs in renewable energy by 2050. Yet the gender gap in pay and opportunities in those roles remains challenging.

The green revolution is accompanied by rising interest in new ways of working, such as the circular economy: a model of production and consumption that helps keep waste and pollution to a minimum.

But it also leads many without deep technical expertise to worry that the environmental revolution will leave them behind.

Are more women climbing the ranks?

Despite the progress made, women still face underrepresentation in leadership positions globally.

Across the EU national governments in the areas of defence, migration and border control, gender equality is absent - only 26% of senior ministers of defence are women. The same applies to NATO, where only 1 in 5 Council representatives are women.

While women are well-represented in politics at EU level with the current European Commission demonstrating full gender parity, representation of women among Members of the European Parliament remains low in several Member States.

With the European Parliament elections this year, we have an open window to change this scenario. Let’s take this opportunity to enhance female representation in decision making positions across the EU.

What the Director has to say...

Director Carlien Scheele continues to pen her thoughts on LinkedIn covering important gender equality issues.

In the last few months, she's brought attention to Equality Bodies and why we need to make more use of these untapped resources, the realities of energy poverty among other inequalities that impact the state of gender equality as well as the complexities of women's financial independence.
