Spring weather in southern France is changeable. You could wear a heavy jacket, a bathing suit, a raincoat, and possibly all on the same day. Spanish Broom flowers a vivid yellow in June just as the red poppies fade to dusty pink.
Now is when grazing animals, sheep, and goats, move to higher altitudes before the blast of summer heat arrives. Watch for flyers announcing local transhumance festivities. The word comes from Latin roots, trans (across) and humus (ground) and relates to the seasonal, nomadic movement of humans and their flocks. If you are in or near the Alpilles, the St Rémy de Provence transhumance is on Monday, June 6th. Kid-friendly and entertaining, watching several thousand animals moving through narrow village streets is worth experiencing.
The image above is one from a collection by Camille Moirenc of majestic Mont Sainte Victoire near Aix-en-Provence. While the mountain might never move in my lifetime, it is never the same twice.
