As some of you may know, Ascendant Neighborhood Development, a coalition member of Landmark East Harlem, is the owner of her childhood home at 178 East 101st Street. The 110 year old structure provides East Harlem with ten deeply affordable apartments.
In Ms. Tyson's honor, AND is partnering with Groundswell NYC to produce a mural for the western façade of 178 E 101st Street. In the coming weeks, AND will share opportunities to engage with the visioning process to bring the mural to life.
Groundswell is a NYC-based organization that brings together youth, artists, and community organizations to use art as a tool for social change, for a more just and equitable world.
Street Co-Naming: On December 14, 2021, New York City Council voted to approve the co-naming of the street where Cicely Tyson's childhood apartment building stands. East 101st Street between Lexington Avenue and Third avenue will now officially be known as Cicely Tyson Way. Ascendant and Landmark East Harlem supplied letters of support for the renaming campaign.
