The big news this week is that live music and other live performance events are now allowed. There are two live music concerts and a live comedy event already scheduled next month, plus films, art exhibitions, and still plenty of virtual talks and entertainment.

WORKSHOP - RESILIENCE FUNDING FOR THE ARTS, Online, Wednesday March 17th 7.45pm

FILM - THE FANTASTIC MR FOX, The Screenery, 81 China St, Friday 19th March 7pm

A 2009 stop motion animated comedy film directed by Wes Anderson, based on Roald Dahl's 1970 children's novel of the same name. The film is about a fox who steals food at night from three mean and wealthy farmers. They are fed up with Mr. Fox's theft and try to kill him so they dig their way into the foxes' home. However, the animals are able to outwit the farmers and live underground.The film stars the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe, Michael Gambon, and Owen Wilson.

Led by Michael Lee of ‘Uglymen’. ‘Uglymen’ is a Chinese Hard Rock band from Alor Setar, Kedah who performed in various underground circuits, band competitions and events back in the early 1990s, winning awards both locally and internationally. In this workshop, Michael and his former band members will share insights and tips for musicians who are planning to start a band or are already in a band. This workshop will be conducted in English.

TALK - AN EVENING WITH SHAHRIN AHMAD, Online, Saturday 20th March 8.30pm

Hosted by Penang’s Astronomical Society, a talk by Shahrin Ahmad, founder and administrator of Falak Online, Malaysia’s popular astronomical resource site. Shahrin has been an amateur astronomer for 37 years, and is a well-renowned local expert on astronomy. Besides observing astronomical objects from his observatory, Shahrin is also an avid eclipse chaser, observing numerous total and annular solar eclipses around the world. Weave words to life with Mislina Mustaffa and Aida Redza on this 2-day online workshop of writing and movement - this time, featuring live music. Trace the language of the body to bring more depth and life into your daily writings and thoughts.

This group class will start with movement to get everyone into a creative state, followed by a writing session led by Mislina. Finally, we will use somatic movement ideas to weave our words together into a simple choreography.

MUSIC - SOLOS FOR SPRING, E&O Macallister Ballroom, Sunday 4th April 5pm

The Penang Arts Council was founded in the 1950s and organised dozens of concerts, operas and art exhibitions until it went dormant in 2005. It was relaunched at the beginning of the year to help promote the arts in Penang, which are suffering as never before because of the pandemic. This first concert features some of the best singers and musicians in Penang performing solo repertoire, as for much of CMCO and MCO 2.0 rehearsing with other musicians was impossible. This is the first of a series of concerts to be held throughout the year.

SHORT FILM SUBMISSIONS - G-SHORT, Online, Until 11th April

G-Short will be a short film festival held as part of the George Town Festival 2021. G-Short wants to encourage local film-makers to create original films, in a 90 second format. Cash prizes for winners.

THE VIBRANT JOURNEY - A SOLO EXHIBITION BY SHOBANA ANNE, Hin Bus Depot, Jalan Gurdwara, Until March 28th 12pm-8pm

Of Malaysian Indian heritage and with a rural Australian upbringing, Shobana Anne was influenced by indigenous Australian art and modern western abstract art. In this exhibit, she responds to the beauty of nature, exploring it both at a microbiological level and with deconstructed organic shapes that represent her impressions of her experiences. For more information, click here.

KECIK-KECIK GROUP SHOW ARTIST CALL OUT, Online, Until March 31st

Penang Art District once again collaborates with Hin Bus Depot to bring Malaysian contemporary art to a wider audience by introducing a variety of affordable contemporary pieces to grow a strong culture of collecting Malaysian art. 

In light of the periodic Movement Control Order, this year, Kecik-Kecik will be conducted online for accessibility while keeping it safe for all artists and collectors.

Sattama is an artist from Sabah. Hin Bus Depot created an mixed exhibition of his sketches, prints, canvas works as well as wood works, but as the MCO forced Hin to close, the exhibition is now online here. All works are for sale.
