VETERANS DAY

It was originally called Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I.

World War I officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919. However, the fighting ended about seven months before that when the Allies and Germany put into effect an armistice on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

For that reason, Nov. 11, 1918, was largely considered the end of “the war to end all wars” and dubbed Armistice Day. In 1926, Congress officially recognized it as the end of the war, and in 1938, it became an official holiday, primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I.

But then World War II and the Korean War happened, so on June 1, 1954, at the urging of veterans service organizations, Congress amended the commemoration yet again by changing the word “armistice” to “veterans” so the day would honor American veterans of all wars.

For a while, Veterans Day’s date was changed, too, and it confused everybody.

Congress signed the Uniform Holiday Bill in 1968 to ensure that a few federal holidays — Veterans Day included — would be celebrated on a Monday. Officials hoped it would spur travel and other family activities over a long weekend, which would stimulate the economy.

On Oct. 25, 1971, the first Veterans Day under this new bill was held. We’re not sure why it took three years to implement, but not surprisingly, there was a lot of confusion about the change, and many states were unhappy, choosing to continue to recognize the day as they previously had — in November.

During the announcement period at this morning's service, we paused to recognize our Veterans. Those present were presented an American Flag Lapel Pin in recognition of their service to our country. Singer, songwriter Don Moen so eloquently wrote, “Give thanks with a grateful heart. Give thanks to the Holy One. Give thanks because He's given Jesus Christ, His Son.” With Thanksgiving Day just three weeks away, we look at ways the book of Psalms teaches and encourages us to express our thankfulness to God!

Psalm 107:1 teaches, “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!”

Psalm 7:17 states, “I will praise the Lord according to His righteousness, and will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.”

Psalm 9:1 reads, “I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works.”

Psalm 34:1 proclaims, “I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.”

Psalm 35:28 declares, “And my tongue shall speak of Your righteousness and of Your praise all the day long.”

Psalm 95:2-3 advises, “Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms. For the Lord is the great God, and the great King above all gods.”

Psalm 100:4 instructs us to, “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.”

Psalm 150:2 encourages us to… “Praise Him for His mighty acts; praise Him according to His excellent greatness!”

And Psalm 150:6 commands, “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!”

Psalms for the most part is a book of prayer and praise! To God Be The Glory for these reminders that the book of Psalms is a precious and “intentionally thankful” biblical treasure. So often we come to God with a list of all the things we want Him to do for us. But may we always be spiritually mindful, each and every day, of sincerely expressing our heartfelt gratefulness to God!

McKinley Emerson, a sophomore at Lafayette High School, received an academic award for maintaining a 3.5 GPA during her freshman year. McKinley is also a member of the Lafayette High School student council and the Girls' Basketball team. She is the daughter of Sister Kellye Emerson and the granddaughter of Rev. Wendell and Dr. Alyce Emerson.

On the behalf of the Givens/Garrett families, thank you for the cards, prayers, kind words and food. The Lord blessed us, the Lord let his face shine upon us and was gracious unto us. The Lord lifted up His countenance upon us and gave us peace.

This Tuesday, November 12, there will be a public hearing before the Lexington Urban County Council regarding a proposed zone change that would require St. Martin's Village to be connected to a new trailer park. We have been asked to make all aware. The hearing will be Tuesday, November 12, at 6:00 p.m. in the Lexington Urban County Government Building.

FLU

Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and sometimes the lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.

Flu shots are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding a flu vaccination.

RSV

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common, contagious virus that usually causes mild symptoms. In older adults and adults with certain underlying conditions, RSV can cause severe infections.

COVID-19

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Most people infected with the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. However, some will become seriously ill and require medical attention. Older people and those with underlying medical conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are more likely to develop serious illness. Anyone can get sick with COVID-19 and become seriously ill or die at any age.

The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the disease and how the virus spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by staying at least 1 metre apart from others, wearing a properly fitted mask, and washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently. Get vaccinated when it’s your turn and follow local guidance.

The virus can spread from an infected person’s mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe. These particles range from larger respiratory droplets to smaller aerosols. It is important to practice respiratory etiquette, for example by coughing into a flexed elbow, and to stay home and self-isolate until you recover if you feel unwell.

Both COVID vaccines and Booster COVID vaccines are available at local pharmacies. Consult your physician regarding COVID vaccinations.
