Update on humanitarian aid for Ukraine

With the continued distressing situation in Ukraine, our members are constantly delivering aid to the people affected. Next to immediate emergency relief, transport services, as well as support to refugees, many of our members make arranged deliveries with local partners and to hospitals in Ukraine. Johannita Hungary delivered durable food and drinks to the Ukrainian border of Romania. St John Malta sent funds to Johannita Hungary for the provision of direct humanitarian aid inside Ukraine. Johanniter Germany is helping the remaining inhabitants of the Kherson area with regular deliveries of food, hygiene products, and water. Our Austrian and Hungarian members are also donating four ambulance vehicles to Ukraine. Read all updates on our network activity for Ukraine here.

JOIN Clinical Working Group meets in London

From 25th to 27th November, the JOIN Clinical Working Group met for the third time this year in London to review and complete the draft of a First Aid Manual for Young People. Delegates from Austria, Cyprus, England, Germany, and the JOIN Board came together in the British capital. During the three-day meeting, our medical doctors reviewed the content of the manual written so far and decided on each sentence of each chapter. The content is aimed at an adolescent audience -aged around 11 to 16- and comprises an introduction to first aid in eleven chapters. Continue reading

Johanniter Austria and Germany re-start Christmas-trucker action

19th November marked the start of the collection of parcels for people in need in South-Eastern Europe by our Austrian and German members. Within the frame of 'Weihnachtstrucker' (Christmas-trucker), Johanniter volunteers deliver parcels in close cooperation with their local partner organisations in the target countries. This year's action is the 29th edition and especially meaningful as the war in Ukraine has aggravated suffering. Next to Ukraine, Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria and Romania, a new target country has been added: The Republic of Moldova. The small country with its 2.7 million inhabitants is one of the poorest countries in Europe and borders Ukraine in the north, east and south, making it a first port of call for many people who have fled the war.

New Volunteer Swap opportunities for winter and 2023

Our Volunteer Swap programme offers new opportunities for December and already several ones for 2023 in England and the Netherlands. You can join St John Ambulance in providing medical cover at six events still this year. Starting on 4th December, events range from races, light shows, and Christmas markets to New Year's celebrations. St John Ambulance also offers to join their "Night Time Economy" support in Newcastle, Manchester, Birmingham, Hanley, Wolverhampton, Leicester, Southampton, and Westminster (London) flexibly on different weekends throughout the year. Next year, you can join Johanniter Nederland during their five different holiday weeks for older people, where you can be part of the team taking care of people and making sure that guests have an unforgettable holiday week. An English volunteer at the Ambulance Service in Vienna

From 14th to 21st November, Myurri Lohesan from St John Ambulance visited Johanniter in Vienna as part of the Volunteer Swap programme. The 25-year-old medical student and volunteer first-aider participated in the Acute Care Services and Ambulance Services. The stay was her first time participating in the Volunteer Swap. She chose Vienna to experience working in services that are not part of the activities carried out by St John Ambulance in England, such as the Acute Care Services. Continue reading

Germany: Johanniter provides help to people in South-Eastern Ukraine

Following the news over the second November weekend that Russian troops are withdrawing from Kherson, there is great joy and incredible confidence in the region. Johanniter International Assistance and its partner NEW DAWN are currently running a project on the frontline to Kherson. Volunteers travel to villages in the region and provide people with food, hygiene items and electricity. Together with NEW DAWN, Johanniter is now helping the people with the basic necessities of life and protecting them from the cold and hunger, especially in the coming weeks. Denmark: fundraising concert for homeless people

On 15th November, our Danish member held a fundraising concert in the Holmens Church in Copenhagen. This was the seventh time that Johanniterhjaelpen held its annual fundraising concert. The church is made available for these concerts at no cost. Likewise, the acclaimed musicians performed for free. The full revenue from ticket sales, as well as donations, went to 'Morgencafé', an organisation which provides various free services for homeless people, such as facilities, food, doctors and nurses, and occasional legal advice.

Austria: Johanniter opens new homeless shelter

The cold winter months are a particularly challenging time for people without shelter. The wave of inflation poses major challenges for many people and families at risk of poverty. Johanniter Austria is therefore opening two additional shelters as part of the winter package, which will be open until May. The new facilities are located in outer Vienna and provide about 130 sleeping places for men. The shelters are operated on a 24-hour basis and also offer a warm and safe retreat during the day, as well as washing facilities and food. Johanniter also operates a shelter for families and a warming house in Vienna. In total, Johanniter provides 330 sleeping places, which are supported by the Vienna Social Fund. International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

The UN has designated 25th November as the international day to raise awareness of violence against women. Violence has many faces and is often hidden: one in three women has experienced physical or sexual violence. One in five girls today is a victim of child sexual abuse. Online violence is on the rise, with one in two young women experiencing gender-based cyber violence. The European Commission announced the establishment of a common EU helpline number for victims of violence against women – 116 016. Women who are victims of violence will be able to call the same number across the EU to get advice and support.
