Slinging the hash.

Cal Ryder, age 17, is spending his long hot 1974 summer as a cook for Ruby's diner. He's the chef, bus boy, trash man, counter help, security and one-third of the staff. The other two are Tina, the waitress who hustles the tip money, and Howard, the Owner, who likes to fish, drink beer and stay away from the diner as much as possible.

Like it isn't hot enough outside without having to slave over a hot stove. Each night the crowds fill up Rubys during the dinner rush. Cal's developed a slick reputation for great grub, mouth watering burgers, crispy fries...
... but that's not what he really wants to do. He really wants to head out somewhere and start out on his own. He never knew his father (died when he was born) and thinks anything is better than being stuck in Albuquerque forever. Just one more year of High School and he'll be free.

For now, he needs to keep stirring the soup pot and flipping the hash browns while he socks away the money. There's already a good sum sunk into that new motorcycle he bought. He got it cheap because it needed repairs, which his (shady) friend Lenny is working on, for a price. As soon as that Honda is fixed up and Lenny's paid, and as soon as Calvin graduates High School he's off...

... to where, he doesn't know. Any where.
