Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Faith
Requires
Mutual
Love”
Aim:
Define Christian
love and discuss its implications;
Reflect
on
the ways we experience Christian love in our lives;
and Practice
love
as it is rooted in our faith in Christ.
Background:
Hebrews 13:1-6;
1 Corinthians 13
Bible
Lesson:
Hebrews
13:1-3
1 Corinthians 13
“And
now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of
these [is] charity.” 1
Corinthians
13:13 KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
theme of our quarter is “A Living Faith.” Our lesson comes
from the New Testament Book of Hebrews and
1 Corinthians 13. Both
New Testament Books are letters to saints. The author of
Hebrews is uncertain, while
the author of 1 Corinthians is Paul. Paul’s letter is
a response
to some troubling reports
regarding the Corinthian
Saints. This week’s lesson emphasizes
that faith requires saints to have and to exercise
love toward one another. As sugar is the key ingredient in all
desserts, love is required to
live
a Christian life.
- Hebrews
13:1-3,
A
Plea for Brotherly Love:
The
writer exhorts
the reader to maintain or continue their love for one another. This
love was to be active, it
is to
meet the needs of others
and
fellow saints and to be genuinely concerned about their well being.
Jesus stated that the greatest commandment was to love the Lord thy
God with all thine heart, soul, mind, and strength and the second
commandment was to love thy neighbor as thyself (Mark
12:28-31).
The author moves next to the
need to extend
hospitality to strangers, those who
are not
your acquaintances. In the culture of that day, travelers were to be
welcomed into
the homes of saints. The author suggests that a stranger might
indeed be one
of the angelic host bringing
an important message as the strangers mentioned
in Genesis
18:1-11,
who visited Abraham announcing
to him that he and Sarah would have a son the same time the
following
year. The author goes further to exhort the saints to extend care
and concern for those detained in prison. The saints were to
empathize with those
in prison
to the extent that they
would
feel what their fellow believers felt and be prompted to provide
tangible assistance, food, clothing, money, etc.
-
1
Corinthians
13:1-3,
Love
is the
Basis of Our Faith: The thirteenth Chapter of 1 Corinthians is universally
regarded as the description of true love. Paul emphasizes to the
Corinthian congregation that love is
more
important than
spiritual gifts. The Corinthian congregants were so excited about
their spiritual gifts that their
concern
for one another was taking a back seat to exercising their gifts.
Paul explains that if one’s gift of speaking in
tongues
(i.e., of which they had not been trained) was of no value if one
did not have and exercise love for
their
fellow saints. He said their utterances were merely noise, like
one
banging on a pot or clanging a
cymbal. Even
if one possessed the gift of prophesy, of understanding baffling
mysteries, and of limitless knowledge and/or
the gift of faith that allows
one
to endure unbelievable obstacles, without having
love
from
God which
includes
genuine concern for others, their gifts are worthless. Further, even
if one offered all of ones resources to feed the poor and offered
themselves as a human sacrifice on an altar, but
did not possess God’s
given
love and
genuine concern for others, their offerings are of no profit. In
other words, some of the most visible and dynamic spiritual gifts
are of no value or benefit if love is absent.
-
1
Corinthians
13:4-7,
Love
is the
Proof of Our Gifts:
Paul
moves on to provide clarity with
some characteristics of genuine love. Before reviewing these
characteristics of love, one must realize that exemplifying these
characteristics requires the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. It is
impossible for these characteristics to be present with only
human intent and strength. Love is long suffering (persevering) and
kind (caring). Next Paul says what love is
NOT:
envious (wanting
what
is not yours
or what others have), seeking
to buildup ones self at the expense of others, arrogant (thinking of
oneself to be better than others), behave in a manner that is
unbecoming of a Christian, seeking
for ones own
way
all the time (no concern for the thoughts or ideas of others),
easily made angry (touchy or easily irritated), expects evil in
others (expects the worst in others), happy in wrong doing (lacking
a conscience). Paul switches streams and gives examples of
what
love IS:
happy in knowing and expressing the truth (tempered with love and
kindness), willing
to help (share in the heavy burdens of others),
looking
for the good in situations (especially in others), and
being
able
to endure difficult situations (even caused by others). Paul
offers examples of what genuine love looks like and what it does not
look like
with
practical examples for the reader to ponder.
-
1
Corinthians
13:8-13,
Love
is Permanent:
Paul
proclaims
that love is permanent. In other words in God’s ever progressive
revelation of His
will,
there comes a time when there will no longer be a need for the gift
of prophesy, for the gift of tongues, and knowledge will vanish;
however, the need for love will never cease!
Paul states
our knowledge is now limited; therefore, his forth telling is only
partial. However, a time is coming when more complete knowledge will
be available, then
more can be shared. He compares Christian maturity to human
maturation and
to the improvement of mirrors.
A child sees and understands within his/her degree of development,
but as one matures to adulthood their understanding and knowledge
expands and they no longer view life as they did as a child. Mirrors
were once made of polished metal which provided reflections
that
were somewhat
distorted; however, with improved technology, glass mirrors provide
a much truer
reflected image.
In the same light, as saints mature more
of their
view point of life should be
from a more
Christ like perspective.
Paul
concludes Chapter 13 by
recounting the key factors of a Christian life which
are
faith, hope, and love and
he
declares that the greatest of these is love. Love is given as the
reason that God gave His Only Begotten Son for our salvation. “For
God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting
life.” John 3:16 KJV
Take
Aways:
-
Christians
are required to love one another and this love is
enabled by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit
-
The
word Love for a Christian is a
verb
and requires action to demonstrate true Christian Concern
-
Christians
are
to love
others because God first loved us
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Therefore
humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you
in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”
1 Peter
5:6-7 NKJV
“Then
shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an
hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison,
and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying,
Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did [it] not to one of the
least of these, ye did [it] not to me.” Matthew
25:44-45 KJV
“But
whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and
shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?”
1 John
3:17 NKJV
“A
new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have
loved you, that ye also love one another.” John
13:34 KJV
“By
this shall all [men] know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love
one to another.” John
13:35 KJV
