Seeker Service Part I - "UU Theology According to Barbie"
Join us in person or watch on YouTube.
As we transition from summer into the regular church year, we offer three special services (our “Seeker Series”) specifically designed for those who are new to Unitarian Universalism, as well as those who may be longtime UUs but are still learning about our faith. Our first service in this series considers how the new movie Barbie speaks to UU values. All are welcome and encouraged to wear pink!
Spoiler Alert: You won't need to have seen BARBIE to understand the sermon, but the sermon WILL include details about the film! Be sure to bring your Barbies or Kens with you!
Participating in Sunday's service:
Service Leader: Rev. Diana Davies; Worship Associate: Cortney Custer; Music: Sarah Gray and Ellisya Ravencroft; Accompanist: Steven Elkins Kennedy; Technical Support: Tammy Epperson and Ellisya Ravencroft

September 10
Official Start of the New Church Year - Join Us for Ingathering!
The official start of our new church year is September 10. Once again, this service will feature a water ceremony. In this ceremony, everyone brings a small container of water that represents a journey (real or symbolic) they’ve taken over the summer. It might be water from a trip to the ocean, or from a favorite fishing hole. It might be rainwater collected after a storm, or water from a beloved pet’s bowl. We gather all these into one container, to symbolize the way we come together as individuals on our separate paths but form one community. Please join us for this special day.

Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday - August 17 - 20
2023 Freedom Fiesta Celebration
You are invited to the 2023 Freedom Fiesta Celebration – 65th Anniversary of the OKC Sit-ins.
On Aug. 19, 1958, high school history teacher Clara Luper and the NAACP Youth Council in Oklahoma began sit-ins to desegregate lunch counters at the Katz Drugstore. This sit-in led to numerous other demonstrations at lunch counters, cafeterias, churches, amusement parks, marches, voter registration drives, and boycotts.
The Clara Luper Legacy Committee and OCU Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion invite you to attend the four-day celebration as we remember the impact of the OKC Sit-ins.
- Thursday, August 17 at Oklahoma History Center, 6:00 p.m. – We've Come This Far by Faith
- Friday, August 18 at Oklahoma Contemporary, 6:00 p.m. – Freedom Story and Art Show
- Saturday, August 19, begins at Frontline and ends at Kaiser's, 9:00 a.m. – March and Sit-in Reenactment
- Sunday, August 20 at Fifth Street Baptist Church, 6:00 p.m. – Freedom Fiesta Celebration Program

UU Book Club Update!
For September 2023, we will be discussing Endurance by Alfred Lansing. In our last meeting, we came up with the following book for October: An Elderly Lady Is Up To No Good
by Helene Tursten.
Also. mentioned in the last meeting were the following books we can consider in the future:
- Horse by Geraldine Brooks
- The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd
I heard about this book on NPR's Science Friday, and it sounds really interesting, well, it does to me anyway: Future Humans by Scott E. Solomon, Ph.D.
- Steve Gryglewicz

News from Sustainable Living Organization
This has been a hard summer. We’ve experienced some of the worst extreme heat on record: July 2023 is the hottest month on record, and 2023 is on track to be the hottest year ever. In Texas, incarcerated human beings have been struggling to endure the extreme heat without air conditioning. Agricultural workers, construction workers, roofers, outdoor workers, and those who work in unairconditioned spaces are all at increased risk of heat-related illness and death with no federal protections for heat. Temperatures are too high for birds and other wildlife to cope. Ocean temperatures exceeding 100 degrees threaten marine life. As of today, the US has had 15 confirmed billion-dollar weather/climate disaster events, including 1 flood, 13 severe storms, and 1 winter storm resulting in 113 deaths.
Our next SLO meeting will be on Sunday, August 20. We are on the church calendar for the 10:00 am Forum that day. It’s the 1st of Rev Diana’s Seeker Services, which generally bring new visitors to the church.
On that day, SLO plans to update the congregation on the proposed Kitchen Policy (which goes before the Board in September), to discuss a plan for training the use of kitchen appliances to all the various groups in the congregation, update on current OKC recycling policies, and Green Sanctuary. We learned that we have an adequate budget to acquire services for composting kitchen waste, and perhaps glass recycling, from Fertile Grounds, all thanks to our sales of coffee, tea and chocolate! So, buy SLO products so we can do more to help the church GREEN UP even more! Details available by that meeting.
If you need a copy of the kitchen policy proposal or want to take a date to sell goods at the SLO table on a Sunday, or just have questions, feel free to email, text or call Tempie Nichols-Rood.

OK LGBTQ+ NEWS - Freedom, as in a future bound with each other: How can we work as a movement to build community with both feet firmly planted in Oklahoma? How can we work so that future generations don’t feel they must leave to be safe, can’t imagine leaving this place they call home? It’s a question we're carrying into this Fall, and next session, and the work beyond that.
Last year during our annual Freedom OK Leadership Summit, we asked you to reimagine with us. This year, we have reimagined our fall programming, under the leadership of Mataia Blackwell and Taylor Raye, and our Leadership Summit has evolved into what we’re calling The Freedom Sessions conference. Register today!
NEWS FROM OK POLICY INSTITUTE: Educare shows positive impact on early learning, study finds: A groundbreaking study titled “Kindergarten through Grade 3 Outcomes Associated with Participation in High-Quality Early Care and Education: A RCT Follow-Up Study” with Tulsa’s Educare has unveiled a transformative solution to the persistent student achievement gap in education. Commemorating 65 Years of Clara Luper’s Historic Sit-Ins: Commemorating the 65th anniversary of the Oklahoma City Sit-Ins, the 2023 Freedom Fiesta is proudly presented by the Clara Luper Legacy Committee. In 1958, Clara Luper and a group of young African American students staged a series of sit-ins at segregated lunch counters in downtown Oklahoma City, protesting against racial segregation and demanding equal treatment for all. Welcome new Committee on Ministry members!
Members of the Committee on Ministry are nominated by the CoM and selected by the Board of Trustees. Our newest members (joining as of July 2023) are Rebecca Daniels, Liz Pillar-Little, and Derrick Wagner. They join Lori Jervis, Tom Peryam, and James Vaughn. Dex Marble is rotating off at the end of this church year. Thank you for your service on this important committee, Dex!
The function of the Committee on Ministry is to monitor on a regular and continuing basis the effectiveness of the church’s ministry, acknowledging and praising areas of strength, and assessing the reasons behind areas of perceived weakness or dissatisfaction, so that we, as a congregation, can grow into our full potential and fulfill our mission. If you have any questions about the role of the Committee on Ministry or have concerns, praise, or ideas about the ministries of this church, you are welcome to reach out to a member of the CoM.
