Helios, newest giant sculpture by Luke Jerram, at Bath Assembly Rooms
Throughout 2025 the National Trust will display internationally renowned artist Luke Jerram’s newest sculpture, Helios, at locations in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The tour will start on Friday 10 January, when the 7-metre sculpture will rise in the Georgian Ball Room at Bath Assembly Rooms.
Helios, named after the Ancient Greek mythological God who personified the sun, will then be installed at some of the charity’s most breathtaking locations, including Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire and Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire.
Helios fuses solar imagery, sunlight and a specially created surround sound composition, including NASA recordings of the sun, by Duncan Speakman and Sarah Anderson. At an approximate scale of 1:200 million, each centimetre of the internally lit spherical sculpture represents 200km of the sun’s surface.
The Assembly Rooms will open in 2025 on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 January for free. Visitors will also be able to experience Helios on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 January and every day between 30 January – 23 February. See visiting times here.
Helios has been co-commissioned by the National Trust, Cork Midsummer Festival, Liverpool Cathedral, Old Royal Naval College and University College London.

Words by Melissa Blease
Whole Roasted Spicy Cauliflower
This healthy, delicious, super-pretty vegan centrepiece packs a big flavour punch and puts a whole new, exotic spin on the humble cauliflower.
Ingredients (serves 4)
1 large cauliflower, tough outer leaves removed
1 tsp cumin
½ tsp ground coriander
1 large garlic clove, peeled and roughly chopped
½ large red chilli, roughly chopped
The zest and juice of 1 unwaxed lemon
1 handful fresh parsley, leaves and stalks roughly chopped
1 handful fresh coriander, leaves and stalks roughly chopped
½ tsp cayenne pepper
150ml extra virgin olive oil
To serve
3 spring onions, thinly sliced
3 tbsp pomegranate seeds
1 tbsp sumac
1 handful of fresh coriander leaves, finely chopped
1 handful of fresh parsley leaves, finely chopped
3 tbsp tahini or thick yoghurt
Method Steam or boil the whole cauliflower for around 10 minutes or until just tender. Set aside to drain in a colander for around 15 minutes, and preheat the oven to 180ºC/gas mark 4.
Take a roasting tin in which the cauliflower will fit snuggly and line with baking paper. Place the whole cauliflower stalk-side down in the middle of the tin, drizzle with around 130ml of the olive oil and season well. Cover loosely with kitchen foil and roast for 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, blend the cumin, coriander powder, garlic, chilli and half the lemon juice together in a blender or food processor to make a rough paste. Add the fresh herbs, cayenne pepper and remaining 120ml of olive oil and blend again until nearly smooth.
Take the cauliflower from the oven, remove the foil and spoon the herby sauce over and around the top, coating it completely. Cover with foil again and return to the oven for a further 30 minutes until the cauliflower is tender when tested with the point of a knife.
Remove the foil and roast for a further 10–15 minutes until the edges of the cauliflower are golden. Transfer to a warm serving dish, drizzle with tahini or thick yoghurt and serve sprinkled with the pomegranate seeds, sumac, chopped spring onions, fresh parsley, fresh coriander and lemon zest.

Curated by Daniel McCabe
Footnote is a bold, new large-format literary and cultural magazine with a cast of notable contributors and interviewees that arrived in the middle of last month and got slightly lost in the deluge of Christmas releases and last minute arrivals. Opening with its centrepiece, a commissioned feature rendered in large text over three pages by novelist, poet and translator A K Blakemore, the ensuing content unfolds as a variety of responses to that text or various parts of it, in the manner of creative footnotes from writers, photographers and illustrators. Hence the name of the magazine. It’s innovative, stylistically fresh and thoughtful, offering a unique reading experience. | £18

Vincenzo Bellini's Opera: Norma 19-22 February
Bath Opera has assembled a stellar international cast for the major roles in this fully staged production. Norma is a tale of epic passions across the divides of conflict, in this case between the Romans and the Gaul Druids around 50BC. A taboo-breaking love triangle threatens to provoke a blood-curdling response but culminates in ultimate self-sacrifice.
Norma contains stunning solo arias such as ‘Casta Diva’, beautiful poignant duets, fiery trios and rousing choruses.
Norma will be sung in Italian with English surtitles.
Each night’s show begins at 7pm

Gail Mason- solo exhibition: Remembered/Imagined?
13 January to 15 March |
|
Taking colour for a dance rather than 'a line for a walk', where speed and gesture combined with periods of reflection and careful editing result in paintings that allow the viewer a space for daydreaming. Offering a sense of perspective, inviting reflection, and celebrating the restorative and hopeful aspects of our world.
Gail's work is characterised by exuberant gestural paintings of semi-abstract landscapes. Looking to nature to inspire and delight, creating fictive environments and revelling in colour which is used to set the emotional tone.

"Bad Santa" steals from Bath Cats and Dogs Home shop over Christmas
Thieves broke into Bath Cats and Dogs Home’s shop on George Street in Bath on Christmas night causing thousands of pounds worth of damage and stealing a donation box and raffle takings.
The charity, which transforms the lives of neglected and abandoned pets, is appealing for donations to offset the damage.
Jasmine Dyer, Retail Manager said: “The shop relies on donations from the public and any money made helps us to rescue and rehabilitate dogs and cats in need. It’s costing thousands to replace the window, which wipes out any profit. We take stock donations at the shop and also at Bath Cats and Dogs Home itself at Claverton Down.”
