Dear ,

Thank you for being part of the BlackHer community!

BlackHer Shero of the Week

Our BlackHer Shero of the Week is Alicia Garza, the founder of Black Futures Lab, which launched the Black Census Project.  She also serves as the strategy and partnerships director for the National Domestic Workers Alliance, the nation’s leading voice for dignity and fairness for the millions of domestic workers in the United States. She is also the co-creator of the Black Lives Matter Global Network, an international movement and organizing project focused on combating anti-black state-sanctioned violence.

Judge Ann C. Williams Shares 5 Rules to Live By

Friday, March 8th was International Women's Day and Angela got the opportunity to catch up with her mentor (and future #BlackHer Shero!), Judge Ann C. Williams.

Now retired, Judge Williams was the first Black person (male or female) to serve on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and only the third woman of color to serve on any United States Court of Appeals. (For the non-lawyers in the house, the U.S. Circuit Courts are second only to the Supreme Court in terms of judicial authority.)

"I don't want to be a white girl."

A powerful new report called Start from the Ground Up by Grantmakers for Girls of Color highlights the paucity and misalignment of philanthropic investment in our girls.  According to the report, "in 2014, $168 million in grants were awarded to organizations for girls of color." However, only $12M (8 percent) was specifically allocated for Black girls.  (See chart below.)

We've. Got. To. Do. More. to increase philanthropic support of our girls, including LISTENING to their needs and solutions.

Read the report and download the toolkit to learn more.
