“This Samos camp is not in European standards, sorry to say, but they just waste the European money to build that prison” - a resident of the Samos camp.
To mark World Refugee Day and to show that not all refugees are safe in Europe, Europe Must Act and the Samos Advocacy Collective are releasing the latest report on life in the closed camp on the Greek island of Samos.
In September 2021, European and Greek authorities inaugurated the Closed Controlled Access Centre of Samos, promising that the EU-funded facility would ensure improved living conditions and safety for its residents.
Last December, our first report, focusing on the testimonies of camp residents, unveiled that life in the facility is tantamount to life in prison. Today, it is time for a second reality check. Through a joint monitoring project, researchers and activists on Samos have been interviewing residents of the closed facility to find out what life inside is really like. “I don't feel safe in the camp at any time. When I'm already in the camp it's stress, it's depression, it's stress that starts.”
