Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Meaning of Faith”
Aim: Identify
the
faith contribution of the heroes in Hebrews 11,
Value
the
people in our lives who act heroically through faith,
and Grow
in
our potential to become faith heroes.
Background: Hebrews
11:
13:1-19
Bible Lesson:
Hebrews
11:1-8,
13-16
Memory
Verse:
“Now
faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things
not seen.” Hebrews
11:1 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
The
Book of Hebrews testifies to the Superiority of Jesus Christ to
everything, even the angels whose sole existence is to go forth
carrying out the Will and Wishes of God.
-
Hebrews
Chapter 11 is sometimes
called the Hall of Faith. It lists saints of old whose actions
exhibited great faith.
-
Our
Study begins with Hebrews 11:1 “Faith is the substance of things
hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”Romans
8:24b “… but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man
seeth, why doth he yet hope for?” Faith is an unwavering belief
and trust in something that does not yet appear. Even though not
seen, one who has true faith believes that in due time it will
appear or occur. The elders, those who lived before us, received
high marks for their faith in very trying times and challenging
circumstances. As Christians, our faith begins with what is reported
in Genesis, that God spoke the world and its content into existence
and that things created were truly created by God from nothing seen
or existing.
-
Hebrews
11:4, begins the roll call of saints of old who received a good
report through their demonstration of faith. First, there is Abel
who offered a sacrifice that the scripture describes as excellent
compared to his brother Cain’s. God himself testified of the
Abel’s gift and even after Cain had slain his brother because of
jealous, Abel’s blood continued to testify of his faithful
sacrifice( Genesis
4:2-10).
Next is Enoch who walked closely with God in
such a faithful manner and
pleased God
that
he was spared seeing
his own death. “And
Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.” (Genesis
5:22).
-
Hebrews
11:6, clearly states that faith is needed to please God and if one
wants to come to God, s/he must believe that He exists and that God
will reward those who diligently seek Him! Whatever is the reward,
it is worth seeking Him!
-
Hebrews
11:7-8, resumes the roll call of the faithful saints of old with
Noah, who was warned by God of an upcoming
flood, something that had never occurred before. He
was
directed by God to build an ark in
preparation. Noah faced ridicule and scorn from many non-believers,
but
Noah faithfully followed God’s directions completely. Because of
Noah’s actions his family and the God’s assigned creatures were
spared death and replenished the earth following the flood. His
family became the heirs of righteousness through Noah’s
faithfulness. (Genesis
6:13-22)
Next is Abraham who is called the “Father of the Faithful.” God
call Abram,
whose name would later be
changed
to Abraham,
to leave his comfortable homeland and to travel to an unknown
location to receive an inheritance. Abraham exhibited faithful
obedience
even though he did not know where he was going (Genesis12:1-4).
In
their old age, Abraham and Sara, were blessed with a son, Isaac, as
promised by God. (Genesis
17:19).
There
has been a question of God’s Faithfulness. He is always true to
His Word!
-
Hebrews
11:13-16, explains that the saints of old died with faith that what
they had been told by God would come to fruition even
though they had not been privileged
to witness it.
These saints of old like Christians of today are strangers and
pilgrims on this earth passing through seeking a city which
has a foundation,
whose
builder
and
maker is
God. Like
the saints of old, we are not interested to turning around from our
journey with God. They like we are headed to our Eternal Home
prepared by God Himself for those who truly believe and trust in
Him!
Take
Aways:
-
Faith
in God pays dividends that cannot be measured from
an
earthly perspective.
-
We
need to hold earth’s temporary material things loosely, because
they are only loaned to us for a season. Instead we must hold to
things Eternal, like faith and hope in Jesus Christ and His
righteousness.
-
Sharing
our experiences with faith in God is our reasonable contribution to
encourage others to trust God with their lives.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“But
without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh
to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them
that diligently seek him.” Hebrews
11:6 KJV
“Trust
in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own
understanding.” Proverbs
3:5 KJV
“And
hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in
our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” Romans
5:5 KJV
“For
with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth
confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever
believeth on him shall not be ashamed.” Romans10:10-11
KJV
“Therefore
being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord
Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace
wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” Romans
5:1-2 KJV
