The analogy of the Christian being a soldier is apt in different respects. Anyone opting for a life in the military understands that the career is not a walk in the park. They are made aware of the tough life to expect and are then trained and prepped for endurance. A soldier is always battle ready. In spite of these, the soldier remains focused and driven by the motivation to be ready to defend their country and sovereignty. We must think like Paul. A soldier once said he is kept encouraged to carry on by looking at the trophies ahead. These trophies are recognition, awards and laurels.
Jesus told his followers categorically ‘carry your cross and follow me’. He let them know that there will be trials and tribulations, even persecutions! So, His disciples knew from the onset what battles they were up against and came onboard with a ready mindset.
“If the soldier carries on with focus and endurance, we must think like Paul (in 1 Corinthians 9:25-26): All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. So, I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing.”
There is no doubt that the world is going through a tough time at the moment. As Christian soldiers’, this shouldn’t have come to us completely as a surprise. We should press on and have our eyes on Christ. This is not the time to let down our guards. No matter what you’re going to face this week, you won’t face it alone. God is with you, he is in you, and he is for you.
Philippians 2:13 says, “God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him” (NLT).
