FROM OUR CURRENT ISSUE | DENTS GLOVES
|
|
|
|
Hand in leather glove
Dents glovemakers has been in business for almost 250 years and the company has become synonymous with English-made luxury gloves. Significantly Dents has made the last three coronation gloves for George V, George VI and Elizabeth II.
In our May magazine we talk to CEO Deborah Moore about the gloving business, how to stay market relevant and some of the more glamorous gloves produced over the years. All the gloves are made from the highest quality ethically sourced leather and are stitched by artisans on traditional glove-making machines, ensuring that they last for decades. Read the feature and find out about leather tranks; hairsheep, deerskin and peccary leather; and how the company has produced gloves for TV dramas and films such as Downton Abbey, Bridgerton and The Crown.
And what about the latest coronation glove? A public announcement has not yet been made, but we can say that the coronation glove for King Charles III will follow in the family line of coronation gloves.

Bank Holiday garden party
There are three Very British Bank Holidays on the near horizon, which can only mean one thing: it's Garden Party season! Get ready to feed a crowd...
Classic Coronation Chicken/Chickpea Salad Cups (makes 12)
Combine 6 tbsp high-quality mayonnaise with 2-3 tsp mild curry powder, 2 tbsp mango chutney and 2 tbsp sultanas. Add 500g shredded roast chicken or 600g canned chickpeas (drained and rinsed) to the mix, stir well to coat in the sauce and season to taste. Arrange 12 romaine lettuce leaves on a platter to create 'cups' and fill each cup with Coronation Chicken.
Ploughman's Sausage Rolls (makes 12)
Line a large baking tray with greaseproof paper. Remove the skins from 6 Cumberland sausages and tip the meat into a large bowl along with 150g of grated mature Cheddar cheese and 100g drained, chopped pickled onions and mix well to combine (clean hands are the best utensils here).
Chop 1 x 500g block of ready made puff pastry in half and roll out on a lightly floured surface to create a rectangle measuring approx. 16 x 40cm. Spread 2 tbsp pickle or chutney down the central section of the pastry sheet then, using slightly damp hands, shape half of the the sausage filling into a long log and place it about 4cm in from one long edge of the pastry. Brush the far edge with beaten egg and fold the pastry over the filling, pressing the edges with a fork to seal.
Cut the pastry log into 6 sausage rolls, brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with a little more grated cheese. Repeat the whole process with the remainder of the pastry and the sausage filling, place all the sausage rolls on the prepared baking tray and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes (or up to 24 hours, covered with clingfilm).
When you're ready to bake, preheat the oven to 190c/gas mark 5 and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the rolls are flaky and golden. Allow to cool slightly before serving warm, with extra pickle or chutney for dipping.
Mini Roast Beef Yorkshire Puddings with Horseradish Cream (makes 12)
Preheat the oven to 230ºC/gas mark 8 and place a 12-hole mini muffin tray in the oven to heat up. Meanwhile, gently combine 1 egg with 85g plain flour and 85ml 50/50 milk/water mixture until you have a smooth batter (the batter can be made up to 8 hours in advance and refrigerated).
Remove the hot muffin tray from the oven, drizzle each hole with a little vegetable oil and slide the tray back into the oven until the oil is smoking hot.
Carefully pour the batter into each hole, slide back into the oven and cook for around 8-10 minutes or until the puddings have browned on top, and puffed up.
While the puddings are cooling on a rack, combine 300ml full fat crème fraîche with 2-3 tbsp horseradish sauce. Season well and add a splash of lemon juice. Add generous dollops of horseradish cream to each mini Yorkshire Pudding and top with ribbons of thinly sliced cold roast beef.
Lemonade Scones (makes 12)
Preheat the oven to 190ºC/gas mark 5 and line a large baking tray with greaseproof paper. In a large bowl, combine 350g self-raising flour, 150ml double cream, 150ml classic lemonade (ie, not a sugar-free variety) and a pinch of salt to create a soft, slightly sticky dough.
Tip the dough out onto a floured surface and knead briefly to bring it together, then roll into a rectangle around 2.5cm thick. Use a floured, 4cm cutter (or upturned glass) to stamp out 12 scones, gathering, rerolling and restamping excess dough if necessary.
Place the scones on the baking tray, glaze with milk and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until risen and golden. Allow to cool on a wire rack before serving dolloped with clotted cream and lemon curd.

OBJECTS OF DESIRE | NEW FROM BREITLING
|
|
|
|
The Chronomat Automatic GMT 40
This is Breitling’s tribute timepiece to travel, not only for its dual time zone display, but also because of its easygoing aesthetics - we love the red GMT hand.
The range comes in a choice of subtle dial colors (Green option shown here, £4,950) and combined with an all-steel case and bracelet, it’ll work with any wardrobe.
The Breitling Caliber 32 movement powers the GMT complication. Its 24-hour scale lets the user track a second time zone and know at a glance whether it’s day or night, while the ‘onion’ crown (a classic Chronomat feature named for its fluted-dome shape) allows for easy adjustments.
As an all-purpose sports watch - designed to cross over Breitling’s air, land and sea watches, the GMT 40 has an impressive 200m water resistance. Sturdy enough for the gym, yet smart enough for black tie this is a great watch for all occasions.

Remembering Barry Humphries 1934 - 2023
This week we fondly remember Barry Humphries, the Australian entertainer, comic genius and all round wit and raconteur who sadly died age 89.
It was just over 1 year ago when Emma Clegg met with Barry ahead of his brilliant Man behind the Mask show at Theatre Royal Bath.
It’s lovely interview; completely charming, generous, - hilarious of course - and with many surprises along the way: including Barry’s links with Bath.
From our April 2022 edition the interview can be enjoyed by clicking here thebathmagazine.co.uk

BOOKS | THE POWER OF THE VACCINE
|
|
|
|
Bestselling author and historian Simon Schama launches his new book Foreign Bodies at Topping & Co.
Simon Schama’s new book Foreign Bodies is an epic history of pandemics, vaccines and the health of nations. Cities and countries engulfed by panic and death, desperate for vaccines but fearful of what inoculation may bring – this is what the world has just gone through with Covid-19. But as Schama shows in his epic history of vulnerable humanity caught between the terror of contagion and the ingenuity of science, it has happened before.
The message is delivered through gripping, page-turning stories set in the 18th and 19th centuries. Smallpox strikes London; cholera hits Paris; plague comes to India. At the heart of it all, Waldemar Haffkine, hailed in England as ‘the saviour of mankind’ for vaccinating millions against cholera and bubonic plague in British India while being cold-shouldered by the medical establishment of the Raj.
Foreign Bodies crosses borders between east and west, Asia and Europe, the worlds of rich and poor, politics and science. Its thrilling story carries with it the credo of its author on the interconnectedness of humanity and nature; of the powerful and the people.
Simon Schama launches his new book at Bath Pavilion on 23 May at 7.30pm, courtesy of Topping & Co. Early Bird price £10, with the price redeemable against a copy of the book, or £30 including a copy of the book.

Paintings and Sculptures by Ray Wirick
Ray Wirick is an American-born artist now working from his Marshfield studio near Bath. Ray’s work has been exhibited and collected extensively in the US, Berlin, London and Hong Kong. His work deals primarily with the human form, both physical and allegorical. In his studio Ray investigates his relationship with worlds both real and imagined, sacred and profane. Often, the human form is dissected, deconstructed and manipulated while investigating its purpose. It is then re-assembled, specific to a new environment and telling a new story.

Curated by Daniel McCabe
The strangely-named Ton is a sumptuous new magazine about decorating and design published by Jermaine Gallacher, a furniture/interior designer and former US Vogue columnist. It aims to showcase the work of a new generation of designers and while it’s supposed to be for ‘everyone’ it does feel aimed at a younger generation of makers and interior design aficionados who aren’t so interested in ogling expensive brand names and high end homes. As this genre goes, Ton is definitely edgy but it’s a true visual treat. | £20

Plans for new Bath Rugby Stadium to go on show
Bath Rugby has today confirmed the club will be revealing new designs to the public for the redevelopment of the club’s current stadium at The Rec.
The stadium plans will go on show at the club’s final home game v Saracens on 6 May 14:00-16:00, as well as on Wednesday 10 May at Widcombe Social Club from 11:00-19:00 and will also be available online at bathrugby.com from 6 May.
Stakeholder and public feedback obtained during previous consultations has influenced the new stadium design that the club plan to submit to B&NES Council this summer.
The previous scheme shared pre-pandemic, has evolved and the project team are looking forward to sharing the stadium’s designs and benefits.
As part of the redevelopment, the public riverside space to the West of The Rec will be widened creating a more inviting and usable space, on matchdays and non-matchdays, and the structure itself will allow for greater community use. Sustainability and environmentally friendly materials are key to the new proposals.
The proposed capacity of the stadium will increase to 18,000 with increased provision for accessibility needs, as well as providing a new permanent home for Bath Rugby Foundation.

Bath City FC v Oxford City. Twerton Park. K/O 3pm
City close out the league season with a home game as they welcome Oxford City to Twerton Park, looking to end the campaign on a high.
Oxford are currently 3rd in the Vanarama National League South table and have already secured their place in the play-offs, but the Hoops need a win to ensure they stay third and gain promotion to National League football.
Despite their high position, they endured a mixed start to the season and are prone to a wobble.
Midweek saw the Romans take a 2-1 victory in their final away game at Hungerford Town with a brace from Scott Wilson enough to see off their opponents. The result also confirmed a top half finish for the club in what has been a long and testing season, a great achievement considering all the injuries the squad has had to endure. They will want to continue this good momentum into Saturday’s game and celebrate with the home fans once more.
This is the last match of the season at Twerton Park so get down and make some noise - it’ll be a great game.
For advance bookings - there’s a two for one tickets offer too so expect a good turnout. (Offer not available at the gate)
