October - the month when the clocks go back an hour and winter is almost with us. It’s also still a month with quite a lot of club activity and the newsletter contains information, some important, on the following – our newly scheduled AGM, our Autumn Reliability Ride, another club visit to Derby Velodrome, our Annual Dinner and Prize Giving and two more Rising Stars sessions.

The calendar says it's autumn but we're still enjoying great weather conditions, let's hope this continues for this coming weekend's Reliability Ride which is always a favourite event and attracts a lot of entrees - it's also a lot cheaper than a sportive too!
We aren't packing up and hibernating until spring either with another velodrome trip this month, if you've never experienced this our visit is suitable for newcomers to the track as well as the more experienced.
I'd like as many members as possible to come along to the AGM - it's your club and your ideas that will keep us moving along in the right direction and continue to grow and attract more cyclists to this great sport.
Matt Sleath has finally managed to set up a new bank account for the club after Yorkshire Bank closed their Banbury branch. This has been more convoluted than we ever envisaged with two banks not wanting our business. Details of the new account are below.

2018 Time Trial season review

Well, the club’s TT season is finally over. We’ve had 24 TTs on a Wednesday night, with only one cancelled – not because of the weather - but an England World Cup match. The weather though, in the form of heavy drifting snow, did force the cancellation of the Hardriders TT, but our new 10 mile Open TT took place in dry, if windy conditions.
The attendance at our weekly TTs continues to grow and attract a wide range of riders from neighbouring clubs. Our largest entry was 55 and we hardly ever drop below 20, even in poor weather. Keri reports that Chris Bagnall, on 18 rides had the best attendance, followed by Geoff Hewett and Paul Dean on 17, while Mery Wolke was top lady on 14. And who does Keri rate as the most improved rider? Roger Foster no less, with our president being the most consistent.
Amongst our visitors on a Wednesday night were Commonwealth Games rider Dan Bigham and Madison Genesis rider George Pym, who both set record times on our 20k and 10m courses respectively. We should also mention our most regular visitor Jon Simpkins, who was the man to beat whenever he appeared.
Simon Kisley was again the most successful club rider, winning the Edmunds Cup, Russell Memorial Bowl and Friswell Cup. Pete Belsey won the handicap Manners Cup, Luke Sherlock was fastest up Burton Dassett to win the Durran Cup and Ian Maconnachie retained his hold on the Trinders Trophy. We had two 2Up TTs; the first was won by Simon Kisley and Mark Boyles and the second by Tobias Wiesand and Henry Slight. Suzy Patience and Naomi de Pennington are leading an ever growing and competitive women’s field, with Suzy first woman home at our new Open 10m TT. The club managed to avenge last year’s Interclub TT defeat, by beating AMG Mercedes and Team Cherwell, but were beaten into second place this year by Bicester Millennium CC in the Leyden Plaque.

The club's second Retro-Ride for classic bikes took place last month with a very pleasant and sedate 24 mile ride, again supported by Brian Reid and Golden Age Cycles. Brian and Izzy (pictured above) were riding a 1970s Meriden and a 1980s Raleigh, while other bikes included a 1960s Viscount, a quite rare 1970s MKM and a1990s Dawes Galaxy. The group had a coffee and cake stop at The Chandlers Arms in Epwell, where they were joined by the Intermediate ride.

OVO Energy Tour of Britain

|
Stage 4 of last month's Tour of Britain climbed both Edgehill and Burton Dassett and as the above photo shows, the latter proved to be the most popular spot to watch. Around 30 members were on the hill and all wearing team kit, were clearly seen on the TV coverage.
The overall GC winner was Julian Alaphilippe (Quick Step), with Briton Alex Paton (Canyon Eisberg) winning the Pink Sprint Jersey. First overall British rider was Scott Davies (Team Dimension Date) in 12th place.

Vuelta a Espana (Tour of Spain) results

|
After showing great form at the Giro in May, Simon Yates (Michelton-Scott) finally got his first Grand Tour win at the Vuelta d Espana last month. His winning margin was a healthy 1m.46s.
This win really underlines how strong cycling in the UK has become, with three home riders winning all the Grand Tours. Chris Froome (Giro d Italia), Geraint Thomas (Tour de France) and now Simon Yates (Vuelta d Espana)

Autumn Reliability Ride on Sunday

Our Autumn Reliability Ride takes place this coming Sunday 7th and again the HQ/Start will be Woodgreen Leisure Centre, Woodgreen Avenue, OX16 0HS.
The 100k (62m) circular course lies south of Banbury in the heart of the beautiful Cotswolds. It heads out via Chipping Norton and Upper Rissington to the most southerly point at Burford, then returns through Charlbury and Great Tew back into Banbury.
There will be 3 start times:
0900: Leisure Pace. For riders stating a time of 4 – 4 1/2 hours.
0915: Intermediate Pace: For riders stating a time of 3 ½ – 4 hours.
0930: Fast Pace: For riders stating a time of 3 ½ hours or less.
A much sought after and highly revered certificate will be awarded to any riders who manage to stay on course and complete the route in their stated time.

Annual General Meeting - 23rd October
|
|
|
At the last AGM in January it was agreed that to aid the smooth running and administration of the club, the AGM should be moved to October. This was voted through at an EGM last month and Tuesday 23rd October is the new date. The meeting will again take place at Wroxton Sports Centre where there is ample parking. Please arrive by around 7.15pm for a prompt 7.30pm start.
You should have already received details of the meeting from Ian, plus the minutes of the last quarterly meeting and the EGM. Please again note that any items for the agenda should be sent to him by Sunday 14th October.
Recent attendance at club meetings has been poor, which is particularly disappointing given both the growth of the membership and the number of cycling activities we are now involved in. The AGM in particular, is your chance to have a say in how your club is run. Should we be doing things differently, are there things you don’t like, would you like to see any changes to club rides, should we launch any new events or initiatives, do you have any comments/ideas to make regarding our TTs, road race, Go-Ride or the race squad?
We need to know and this is your chance to have a say.

Annual Dinner & Prize Giving
|
|
|
The club's Annual Dinner and Prize Giving will be slightly earlier this year on Friday 16th November. The venue is The Castle at Edgehill, a popular club coffee stop as well as a sponsor of our road race.
The cost will be £25 per head for a three course dinner and wine and as we are limited to 40 people, bookings will be on a first come first serve basis. The club have booked Steve Abraham of "One year time trial" fame as a guest speaker. He'll have some great stories to tell after riding over 70,000 miles last year.

Derby Velodrome visit 19th October

Our next club visit to Derby Arena Velodrome is later this month on Friday 19th October with a 2 hour session booked from 11am.
The group session price is £20 with the provision of two coaches for the full 2 hours. Bike hire is £13.45 and shoes £6.20. Last time 24 members went, which is an ideal maximum number for coaching purposes.
The club has already paid a deposit and we now need to firm up on numbers and collect payment from members. Only the £20 session fee is required at this stage.

At January’s AGM the mandatory fitting of mudguards and flaps on all club winter rides between 1st November and 31st March was agreed and is now written into the club rules. The exception to this will be if dry roads and weather are forecast.
The fitting of rear mud flaps is also strongly encouraged where mudguards are short and spray is still thrown up into the face of a following rider. Various types of flaps are widely available, but the club have also sourced some BSCC branded flaps (see above) for those interested. They cost £8 each, can be fitted by anyone with basic bike maintenance skills and are due for delivery in time for the AGM - a great reason to attend!

Several members have already entered the Closed Circuit National TT Championship at Thruxton race circuit on 21st October. The event distance is 10.8 miles and hopefully more members will come along to this popular season ending event. There are categories for women and juniors, as well as all the normal male categories. Entries close on 11th October and the link to the men's event is below.
The Monday night chain gangs continue from 6.15pm, while Turbo sessions will begin again the first Wednesday in November. More details will be posted on Facebook nearer the time.
Also, for the road racers amongst you, the Abingdon Winter Crit series starts on 6th October with 4 rounds running until 3rd November.

Rising Stars - youth section news

Our Rising Stars/Go-Ride programme is now really starting to take off, with a regular turn out at our Saturday sessions of between 12 and 15 riders.
As can be seen from the above photos, three of them took part in a Central League cyclocross race at MK Bowl recently - an ideal start to get into competition.
In case you're wondering, this is what we did at our last September session. It started with off bike and on bike warm-ups aimed at promoting skills, without the riders knowing it. The session built through leading and following exercises firstly in pairs, then 3's and 4's to a point that mini 'chaingangs' were riding around a track. The final exercise was a team pursuit race which allowed the riders to put the new skills into practice, with a competitive twist.
As mentioned last month, we could really do with a couple more Level 1 coaches if we are to make this scheme a success. Under BC Go-Ride rules, we require one coach for every 15 children, so at the moment we are unable to grow the scheme much further. We have another coach on the way, but if you're interested then please contact Lee via the link below for further details.
Our next two sessions will be on Saturday 13th and 27th October, starting as usual at 9.30am at Banbury Rugby Club.
Don't forget, if your child joins the club as a junior member, which costs just £5, then they get a free Rising Stars T-shirt.

Following the announcement in last month's newsletter, not enough orders were received by Dave Speck to warrant a new order being placed. Dave advises that the order is still open and will be placed as soon as the minimum quantity is reached.

During the summer months two club members, Joby Mullens and Barry Duplock have both been on long charity rides.
In August Joby rode all the way from Banbury to Florence in aid of the Katherine House Hospice

Then in September Barry rode solo from Land’s End to John O’Groats in 7 days for the charity, Care of Police Survivors.
Barry had already ridden this classic route in the other direction a couple of years ago in a group ride. That took 9 days, so his latest ride, 2 days quicker and averaging around 130 miles a day, is quite impressive.
