A Message from Our President

Collecting Quilts for "Children at Risk"

Since the UMC Annual Conference has been cancelled for 2020, it has been decided to collect the quilts/blankets at the UMW Conference Annual Meeting in October.  If you cannot attend that meeting, please bring the quilts to our District Annual Meeting in September and I will take them to the Conference annual meeting.
All quilts/blankets need to be bagged with your unit's name on the outside of the bag along with the number of quilts enclosed.
If you know of any churches that usually donate quilts but don't have a UMW unit, please contact them to see if you can collect the quilts for them.  Otherwise they can hold them until next year.
Any questions, don't hesitate to contact me.

Stay safe,

Susan

Mission u Cancellation

A message from the Conference newsletter

Dear deans and assistant deans,

We are sorry to inform you that, due to the ongoing threat of COVID-19, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our virtual Mission u training (planned for April 30-May 3 and May 27-30) and we are urging that every conference also cancel their own Mission u events. After much prayer and discussion, the Mission u team and United Methodist Women senior leadership team agreed that it is too great a risk to gather in person this summer.

We know how much work you and each conference team have put into Mission u, and we are grieving with you that our Mission u 2020 events will not take place how we expected. This does not mean, however, that we will forgo these important and timely studies altogether! If there is ever a time to “find peace in an anxious world” that time is now.

Here is what we hope to do instead. National Office staff will collaborate with study leader trainers to bring elements of each study online this summer. The exact format and timeline for each study is still in development and more information will be coming as those pieces take shape. However, it is our hope that those in the Mission u community and the wider church will still be able to engage and benefit from these timely studies from the safety and comfort of their homes.

What does this mean for 2021 Mission u? We will continue as planned with our 2021 studies:

  • Moral Witness of the Church
  • Pushout
  • Children’s and Youth Studies on Violence
  • Luke 13: New Biblically-based Curriculum

An email will go out to all study leaders on Monday to share this news, so you have a few days of advance notice if you wish to tell your team first.

“May the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7

In gratitude,

Olivia, Jay, Chantilly

Your Mission u Team

Catch a Fire

The symbol of United Methodist Women talks about us as women who share our light through faith, hope and love in action.  We cannot share from an empty cup.  We get our inspiration from the Holy Spirit.

We usually fill our cup while we are at church, our unit meetings, our circle meetings (if you have them), reading our program books and such.  At these times, when we cannot gather to fill each other up, we need to find ways to keep our cups full.

One thing to remember, the Holy Spirit found the disciples inside a house. It can find you wherever you are, as well!

Here is an activity for you to do. Light a candle, and think of all the good you have done, you can do now, and you will do in the future!  You can still catch the fire of the Holy Spirit to empower you for your future work!

Book Review - Social Action 2019

I selected this book to review for two main reasons.  First, it is available in most library systems in electronic format as a book, audio, or both.  Secondly, the title and many of the introspective questions that Martin Luther King, Jr. asks throughout the book can be applied to our current situation as well as the situation that he was originally writing about!

I found the book interesting and thought provoking when I read it.  Below is part of the review from the publisher.

"In 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., isolated himself from the demands of the civil rights movement, rented a house in Jamaica with no telephone, and labored over his final manuscript. In this significantly prophetic work, which has been unavailable for more than ten years, we find King’s acute analysis of American race relations and the state of the movement after a decade of civil rights efforts. Here he lays out his thoughts, plans, and dreams for America’s future, including the need for better jobs, higher wages, decent housing, and quality education. With a universal message of hope that continues to resonate, King demanded an end to global suffering, powerfully asserting that humankind-for the first time-has the resources and technology to eradicate poverty."

Final Thoughts

In times like these, it is hard to know where you can use the fire from the Holy Spirit to bring faith, hope and love in action to our community and the world.  Contact another shut in by phone, regular mail, or video. Send cards, write letters to officials, or each other.  Work on your service project items.  Sew, knit, crochet, embroider...  Face masks are needed now and will be for a while. Quilts, blankets and afghans are needed by the children at risk.  Chemo caps and newborn hats are still needed. Prayer shawls, lap robes, hats, mitten, scarves, socks for those all who need them.  Keeping your hands busy and your hearts full will help prepare you to keep your fire lit!
