Dear friends,
Hello and welcome to this newsletter from the Royal Sutton Coldfield Orchestra.
Our next concert is this coming Saturday 21 May at 7.30pm at Holy Trinity Parish Church, Mill Street, Sutton Coldfield, B72 1TF.
It’s a particularly special concert of music originally chosen, pre-Covid, by our long-standing guest conductor Malcolm Goldring. We were all very shocked and saddened when Malcolm died in May last year after a short illness and we dedicate this concert to him.
The concert’s theme is ‘Musical Tales’ and will include excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty Suite, Humperdinck’s Prelude to the opera Hansel and Gretel, a selection from Bizet’s Carmen Suite and Delius’s On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring. We’ll also play Bernstein’s Overture to Candide which you may remember Malcolm conducting with the orchestra some years ago.
We’re delighted to welcome back violinist Madeleine Dawson as soloist in Beethoven’s Romance No 2 and Saint-Saëns’s Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso. Currently studying for a Master’s at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Madeleine first performed with the RSCO in 2012 when she played the Kabalevsky Violin Concerto in our Young Soloists’ Concert.
