Today's Bible Study Lesson
"Hagar and Ishmael Not Forgotten"
Aim: Discover
how
God
was with Hagar and Ishmael;
Believe
that
God is at work, even in the midst of hopeless situations; and Trust
in
God’s presence and provision, even when experiencing injustice.
Background:
Genesis 21:8-21
Bible Lesson:
Genesis 21:18-20
Memory
Verse:
“And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of
God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth
thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where
he [is]. Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I
will make him a great nation.” Genesis 21:17-18 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
At
age 75, God directed
Abram to leave his home and kinfolks
for a land that He would show him. God also blessed
him
and promised that he would make
him a
great nation and
make Abram’s name great
(Genesis
12).
After
several years had
past
and God had not given Abram and his wife a child, Abram petitioned
God for the promise of many nations to go through his servant,
Eliezer
(Genesis
15:1-2).
But
God rejected Abram’s petition and reassured Abram
that the promise would come through his
flesh and blood. God made a covenant with Abram which
included the possession of
a vast land for his
seed.
This
land
spread from the river of Egypt to the Euphrates River.
After
ten years had past and
no
son was born to them, Abram
and his wife, Sarai,
became impatient
while
waiting
for God’s promise of a child. Sarai
suggested
to
Abram that
he
go into her slave, Hagar, and birth a child (Genesis
16:2).
Abram accepted his wife’s advice and a son was conceived. Hagar
used her
pregnancy
to torment
Sarai
because
Sarai
was still barren.
When Sarai
complained to Abram, he reminded her that Hagar was her slave and
she could do with her as she wished. Sarai’s
harsh
treatment
forced
Hagar
to run away into
the wilderness.
In
the wilderness, God
directed Hagar to return and to
submit
herself to her mistress, Sarai
(Genesis
16:4-11).
God
also promised Hagar that her seed would multiple exceedingly. The
son born to Hagar by way of Abram was named Ismael, which means “God
hears.” At
age 99, God came to Abram and made a covenant with him to make Abram
the father of many nations and God
changed
his name from Abram to Abraham. Sarai’s name was
changed to
Sarah for she would
be
the mother of many nations (Genesis
17:5, 15).
Abram
wanted God’s
Promise
to come through his
son, Ishmael,
but God stated that the promised nation would come through a child
from Sarai.
Finally,
at
age 100 and Sarah at age
90,
God gave them
a son and
they
named
him
Isaac (Genesis
21:1-3).
-
Genesis
21 opens with
God
fulfilling His Promise with the birth of the long
awaited
child to Abraham and Sarah. On the eighth day after Isaac’s
birth, he was circumcised like
every
male child. This
was
a reminder of God’s Promise to Abraham to be the father of many
nations.
The
Biblical account moves to
a feast being
given to
commemorate
Isaac
being weaned from his mother. During this feast, Ishmael, who now is
about
thirteen years old laughed at Isaac, which infuriated Sarah. Sarah
immediately confronted Abraham and demanded that Hagar and Ishmael
be sent away. She further stated that Ishmael should not be an heir
with Isaac. This demand placed Abraham in a very uncomfortable
position for he loved Ishmael very
much,
who was his flesh and blood and he also
loved
his wife. Before
he could formulate a course of action, God appeared to him and
assured him that Ishmael would be taken care of,
because he
too was
an offspring of Abraham and
he
would
be the root of a great nation. God
also told Abraham
not to be disturbed by Sarah’s demand and to honor it. Early the
next morning, he
sent
Hagar and Ishmael away with the meager provisions of some bread and
a bottle of water. They departed and wandered in the wilderness of
Beersheba.
-
When
the water was depleted, Hagar placed Ishmael under a bush and
went
a distance away to
sobb
for she could not bear to see her son suffer and die. God heard the
cry of the young lad and dispatched
an Angel
to inquire of Hagar as to what was wrong and to
make
it known to her that God had heard Ishmael’s cry. The
Angel
directed her to go and
comfort
the boy. The
Angel
revealed
to Hagar
that God would create a great nation through Ishmael.
God opened her eyes and she saw a
well
where she could replenish her water bottle
and
satisfy Ishmael’s
thirst.
-
God
continued to provide for Hagar and Ishmael while
they remained
in the wilderness and Ishmael
grew and
became
an expert archer.
-
Isaac
was
the child of Promise through whom the Israelites came and Ishmael
was
the child through whom the Arab nation came. The conflict that began
in Abraham’s family through
Isaac and Ishmael
continues today in the Middle East
between the
Jews
and Arabs.
Take
Aways:
-
We must learn to wait on the
Lord for He knows what is best for us.
-
Deviating from God’s Will
has consequences that we cannot always see.
-
No matter how helpless and
hopeless the situation seems, God will never leave or forsake His
children
Bible
