Hello ,
Are you amid transitions at work, relationships or personal life?
Maybe it’s exciting transitions - you just landed a new job got into a new relationship or became a parent for the first time?
Or distressing ones - you lost a job, got separated from a long-term relationship, or lost a loved one?
Some of you might simply be feeling stuck in life - like you’re in a limbo where things are not bad, but things aren’t great either.
Life and its transitions spare none
Each one of them challenges us differently. The first and the most obvious one of course is that any transition involves change and as creatures of habit, our first response to change is to resist it. But there’s more to the overwhelm from life transitions than what meets the eye.
The real reason transitions are challenging
The real reason is that our sense of identity and purpose shifts with life transitions. When things that are close to our hearts - our careers, close relationships, or personal passion projects - don’t go the way we plan or hoped they would, they shake the very ground on which we mentally build this feeble construct of life.
We start to question…
- Who am I?
- What am I doing?
- How does this add up to my life so far?
- Does this even lead to where I want to go in the future?
- Who do I want to be?
- What do I want the rest of my life to be about?
These are big existential questions that shake our sense of identity and this can be a scary experience if we are not prepared for it. Often, we end up losing ourselves in the process.
The good thing is, you’re not alone.
I speak with many high achievers and phenomenal humans who try hard to cope with life and its transitions every single day. So it's not just you, but each one of us.
The hard thing is, you have to constantly recalibrate.
These are not one-time things that you find answers for once, solve them and are done with. Nope! Life is constantly evolving and changing, and along with it our identities and sense of purpose.
We need to have a mechanism for tapping into our self-awareness, to regularly check in with ourselves on what’s shifting for us from within, and realign it with our long-term vision to make it count.
