BILLY, ARE YOU OK? ARE YOU OK, BILLY?

Hey !

This is probably going to sound a little crazy, but I’ve been waiting for a particular bookcase for 7 months.

Yep, you heard right. 7 months.

Why, you might ask, would I wait for a specific bookcase for so long? Is it made of gold? Does it play music? Or keep itself clean? It must be, as my sis put it, a really special kind of bookcase to want to wait that long for it.

Truth is, it isn’t anything particularly special. BUT, it seemed like the answer to all my problems.

You see, my office isn’t the biggest space in the world and it turns out I’ve got a whole lot of stuff to fill up shelves with. I needed something that was a good size but wouldn’t take up tons of wall space (because I also have two wall planners, as well as some pretty stuff to look at).

I alighted on these shelves in my online search for something that would sit nicely in the corner, had tons of storage space and didn’t cost the earth to buy.

Thank you, Ikea!

But here’s where the problems kicked in. They were out of stock and there was no telling when they would be back IN STOCK again.

I decided they were worth the wait.

So, after 7 months, one false start, and a price increase, I finally got the news I’d been waiting for. They were in! I quickly ordered them online and went down to pick them up that very afternoon.

Well, lovely, the shelves are now up in my office and I spent a very pleasurable Saturday afternoon putting everything on them. There’s actually room to spare, I’ve cleared up all the bits that were laying across my drawers and floor and I finally feel like my office is getting to where I want it to be.

The real effect of those $200 shelves was felt on Monday morning.

I walked into the office, ready to start my day and LITERALLY breathed a sigh of relief. And I’ve felt exactly the same way every single morning I’ve walked in here since.

It might seem strange that a cheap set of flat-pack shelves from Ikea could have such a profound effect on a person. Maybe it is. But, when you’re running a business where you need to be creative (and that goes for you, beautiful business owner, because running a business takes a certain kind of creative brain to make it work!), it’s so important to get the FEEL OF YOUR SPACE RIGHT.

AmIright?

Who’s with me on this?

So, if you’ve felt like you’ve been struggling with your business lately, if the ideas haven’t been flowing or you’ve found it hard to write the social posts and do all the creative stuff you have to do behind the scenes, why not look at the space you’re working in and see what you can change to bring back inspiration again?

I’m not, for one minute, suggesting you wait 7 months for a particular set of shelves (although you absolutely can if you want to!). But it might just be as simple as decluttering your desk, making sure everything has a home and is put back in its rightful place. Or maybe adding some art or something pretty to your walls. Or even lighting a scented candle or putting on some music while you work.

Give yourself a head start with your creativity by changing your environment to inspire you and then feel the creativity start to flow!

I’d love to hear what you do. Hit reply and let me know!

Go with the flow…

P.S.
