August PAW This Month!

PAW Dog of the Month: Monroe

ADOPT MONROE!

Monroe is an outgoing, playful, loving 2 year old, 61 lb., male Treeing Walker Coonhound. He loves to play with people and dogs of all shapes and sizes, and does really great in the car. He attended a Bowie Baysox game recently and was quite anxious around the loud noises in the stadium, which makes sense since he's originally from a very rural area. New experiences are scary! Monroe is trying to work on his house-training but does still have accidents; he just needs someone to show him the ropes! Living indoors is a new thing for Monroe. If you want a sweet and very energetic pup who loves people and dogs, Monroe is the dog for you!

If you are interested in adopting Monroe, please go to https://www.petstablished.com/adoptions/personal-information?application_type=Adopt&pet_id=405690 to submit an application. Thank you for helping Monroe find his forever home!

PAW Cat of the Month: Lupine

ADOPT LUPINE!

Lupine is a small and cuddly cat with one eye. As a small kitten in November 2018, Lupine and her fellow litter mates were rescued from a hoarding situation. They were all suffering with a respiratory infection that left Lupine blind in her right eye. In July it was necessary to remove her eye. She is a true lap cat. If you are watching TV or reading a book, she wants to be there with you on your lap. Lupine gets along well with other cats. Her favorite game is to play soccer with any kind of ball or toy. She enjoys boxes, toys on a string and cooing to the humans in the house. Having only one eye has not stopped this warm and cuddly kitty from doing anything.

Consider adopting Lupine along with one of her wonderful siblings (she's best friends with Allium) = instant loving cat family!

Lupine is spayed, FIV/FELV negative and up to date on her vaccinations.

If you would like to meet Lupine, please contact Sally at homecooking@gmail.com.

Thank you for helping Lupine find her forever home!

How Maryland and Federal Employees Can Help PAW

Maryland Charity Campaign (MCC): is a workplace charitable giving program that offers State Employees and eligible Retirees the opportunity to contribute to charities using the convenience of payroll deduction. Currently, more than 800 charities participate in the campaign, including PAW. The MCC runs from October 9 - December 18, 2018. If you are a MD State employee or eligible retiree and would like to donate to PAW through the MCC, please go to:  https://mcc.maryland.gov/. Thank you!

Combined Federal Campaign (CFC): About 85% of PAW expenses this year will be for veterinary care and boarding for our rescue animals. Our funding is entirely dependent on individual bequests, donations at fundraising events, the website, and the Combined Federal Campaign. CFC is the workplace charitable donation vehicle for active and retired federal employees and contractors, and represents more than 22,000 charities. We receive about 20% of our income through CFC, a 50% decline over recent years. Donations to all CFC charities are down and this year's fundraising atmosphere will be particularly challenging. If we are to continue to rescue, heal, and place animals at our current pace, we need to raise significantly more CFC funds. If you are an active or retired federal employee and would like to donate through CFC, please be sure to speak with your agency CFC coordinator. You can also ask your CFC coordinator to get us an invitation to their charity fair!  CFC events occur primarily between early October and mid-November on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. If you are interested in helping at one of the fairs, please contact Martha at marthaoppenheim1@gmail.com. You do not need to be a federal employee or retiree to help at the fairs. We really appreciate your help!

Shop with Amazon Smile!

When shopping online with Amazon, make sure you shop through Amazon Smile. It is exactly the same, except a portion of your purchase will benefit PAW. In the 1st Quarter of this year, Amazon Smile users contributed $362.44 by just simply shopping. So please remember to shop with Amazon Smile and make sure PAW is your chosen non-profit. Thank you for all of your support!

Using the “She’s a Rescue Dog” Excuse

Why I'm going to stop.

A Message From our Friends at Psychology Today

Bella doesn’t like to be touched by humans she doesn’t know and trust. When I’m out walking with Bella and I encounter other dog-walkers or run into people I know, Bella will stand or sit quietly behind me or by my side. She’s a perfect lady. But if a stranger reaches out to try to pet Bella, she reacts. She’ll pull her ears back and get tense and if they keep moving forward she’ll bark and even give a cautionary nip at their fingers. To avoid having people try to pet Bella, I’ve put a bright orange “Caution” sleeve on her collar, and try to always position myself in between Bella and other people.

Still, many people fail to notice or heed these warnings and will try to pet her or will (as advised by many dog behavior books) hold out a hand to let her sniff—a gesture which Bella finds threatening rather than inviting.

As a result, I often find myself in awkward situations where people’s friendly attempts to greet Bella have been rebuffed by me or Bella or both. And for whatever reason, I feel the need to make excuses. The excuse I tend to use is “she’s a rescue dog.” It's as if this should explain why she doesn’t particularly like or trust people and why she is so cranky.
