5 quick things –
Three beautiful smiling women by a street sign that says

Hi, gorgeous!

If you are new to this weekly newsletter: welcome! This is where I try to add a bit of real and true value to your life by sharing 5 cool things I think you might like.

Although I do mention things I am working on sometimes, this is decidedly not a marketing newsletter. It's more like, "Ooh cool, look at this." It's a way of connecting more directly. To get in touch with me all you have to do is hit reply. It's really me, lol!

Anyhoo – for those of you who have been around for a while, sorry I missed last week. I was deep into a team retreat with the lovely women in the pic above and I figured it was better to take a week off than to half-ass it. I take your time and attention seriously, y'all! Here's to the present moment. And my awesome team.

Okay, here are your 5 things for this week. âŹ¬

    A bald, beautiful Ayanna Pressley
    READ + WATCH + LEARN
    2. ‽ , Baldness, Troop Zero

Did you know that there is a punctuation mark called the "interrobang" which is basically "?!" put together? I didn't know either but now we both know.

Representative Ayanna Pressley recently revealed that she is bald (from alopecia) in this beautiful and emotional video for The Root. I was hopping in my seat and snapping my fingers when she said:

"I'm not here just to occupy space, I'm here to create it."

Visibility matters. It matters when we fully occupy space as who we are; it gives permission to others to do the same. May we all feel safe enough to do that.

I watched Troop Zero, the new movie on Amazon, because it has both Viola Davis and Allison Janney in it and I thought it was going to be kind of Troop Beverly Hills-ish, all of which I am fully here for.

But it turns out that it is a freaking adorable movie about a badass young girl (keep your eye on this Mckenna Grace actor, she was fantastic) and her attempts to contact the aliens. Forget that it sounds weird; it is so good. Watch it, you will be so glad you did!

    NOW READING
    3. Nevada by Imogen Binnie

As much as I like to think of myself as an ally for my trans, non-binary, and genderqueer friends, I recently realized that I have never read a book with a protagonist that identifies as such. Big miss on my part!

To begin to fix this, I am currently reading Nevada, which has been called a quintessential coming-of-age novel and features Maria, a transgender woman whose struggles are both hyper-specific and universally relatable.

    My fave line so far:

"...but like most defense mechanisms, it wasn’t conscious, and like most defense mechanisms, it became a pattern you weren’t aware of, and then, like most defense mechanisms, at some point it stopped making your life easier and started making your life harder."

    PRACTICE TIP OF THE WEEK
    4. more mindful technology use

I did an interview with a UK magazine this week (I'll share the link when it comes out) and I was giving practical tips for more mindful use of technology. The most helpful thing is to intentionally create friction between you and the tech you are trying to create space from.

Here are some ways to do that:

    • Delete social media apps (you can give yourself permission to use them on the computer, but you'll be much less tempted)
    • Bury addictive apps several pages into a folder–which will give you a hot second to consider why you're using them
    • Put your phone into B+W mode. So boring! In a good way.
    • And of course, turn off all notifications not from a human being in real time. :)

BTW we did the "skull hug" practice a lot in our retreat; it's a great calming technique, and a fan favorite. If you missed it in the last newsletter, you can check it out here. It's so good.

    tiny glowing fish
    NATURE IS AMAZING
    5. glowup, glass, brains

There is a #glowup joke in here somewhere: these tiny fish have learned how to "steal" bioluminescence by eating even tinier shrimp that evolved the ability to glow. It used to be thought that this couldn't happen because an animal's stomach would digest the glow proteins, but this fish evolved something called "a kleptoprotein" that lets the glow stay intact. Ha ha I am NOT making this up! Go nature.

Researchers of the Mount Vesuvius eruption just figured out that what seemed like glass inside the skulls of skeletons was.... brain glass, which was somehow made by the flash heat from the eruption. (This is another thing that wasn't thought possible. Mama Nature just isn't concerned with our limited ideas, is she?)

Speaking of, you know, us catching up to the natural world, we are finally starting to understand which brain cells connect the brain to the body. Some are called microglial cells and we have so much more to learn about them. But let's be clear: there is no mind-body connection because there is no difference. Kk? :)

BTW, I will be sharing more about it soon, but heads up: I'll be teaching at a verrrry cool retreat in Montana in July called Mindful Unplug. It's at North America's #1 retreat center, according to Yoga Journal; it's going to be special. If you're interested, I would love to have you join us!!
