Presidential ponderings

June is always a busy month for cycling and this year was no exception although summer did go AWOL when the Women's OVO Energy Tour passed through the region with it's Burton Dassett summit finish.

Taking advantage of the light evenings, we've held some of our longest time trials although yet again the "Xandora 30" had to be shortened due to traffic lights. Club reccords continue to tumble with newcomer Will Davey making the Edge Hill TT look easy when he took the crown from Jon Simpson and Naomi de Pennington goes from strength to strength on her new TT bike too.

I've had to take a bit of a break from cycling due to a niggling knee injury but hope to be back on club rides in the very near future. The ride leaders continue to do a great job each and every weekend, please support them and your fellow club members by riding safely and responsibly and I'll be back to nag you all again soon!

Paul

STOP PRESS: Charlie Quarterman is no stranger to BSCC, having taken part in some of our TTs and recently setting a new joint record on the K4/20 with Dan Bigham. Proving he's in the form of his life and on the back of taking part in the U23 Giro d'Italia he's just become the British National U23 TT Champion, beating the highly experienced Ethan Hayter. It was more good news for BSCC in the U23 Women's race with Lydia Watts finishing 10th. We look forward to seeing Lydia and Charlie race with us again soon.

Club Gazebo

With a design by Mark Boyles, the club now has a branded gazebo to help further promote what we do and will be used at public events such as the Road Race, People's Park Centenary, Road Races, Time Trials etc.

People's Park Centenary 14th July

The club has been invited to take part in the Centenary celebrations of the People's Park as we were there for its inauguration back in 1919.

It will be held on Sunday 14th July and to mark this special day, the Sunday club ride will be delayed a little bit so as we can be part of the procession leaving the Town Hall at 1030am which then makes its way up to the Park via Banbury Cross. In the Park a fete will be held at which we will have a stand to promote cycling with the club's gazebo in place and a display of bikes old and new. If you want to help on the stand even if it's just for 30 minutes please contact Paul Dean.

We also had a look back through the club's archive material about the 1919 event, below is an extract from the club's first Minute Book, confirming the club's planned participation:

Committee Meeting 22 May 1919           Mr Adkins in Chair

Proposed by Mr Harnaman seconded by Mr Creed that the Club take part in the Peace Celebrations.

Proposed by Mr Arms seconded by Mr Harnaman that Mr Ballard be appointed as delegate to Committee of the Peace Celebrations.

Proposed by Mr Arms seconded by Mr Prescott that Club will put it to all members re Comrades Cyclists Carnival and will assist in any possible way.

Women's Tour finish at Burton Dassett

Driving rain and strong winds didn't deter the riders or club members who made the trek up the hill to see some great racing as part of Stage 4 of the 2019 Women's OVO Energy Tour.

Mark Davis's photo captures eventual Tour winner Lizzie Deignan, crossing the line at the top of Burton Dassett on lap 1, just ahead of last year's winner Coryn Rivera.

Banbury Star also managed to get a club member on the winner's podium too in Peggy Simpson who had the honour of presenting Christine Majerus with the Skoda QOM jersey.

OVO Men's Tour of Britain - 7-14 Sept.

Well, some of us have now seen the women tackle Burton Dassett in fairly miserable weather, but let's hope the sun comes out for the men in September. Full details of the men's edition of the OVO Tour of Britain (7th - 14th September) can be found via the link below. Like the women they'll also be finishing at the top of Burton Dassett on Stage 7, but this time they'll do 3 laps of the final loop.

Hopefully, with better weather, we can this time have a larger gathering of club members present to cheer them all on.

Banbury Association of Driving Instructors

The President's inbox gets a steady stream of emails from the drivers of Banbury complaining about cyclists (not just club members, but anyone who just happens to be on a bike!) and so it made a change to receive a mail from the local Association of Driving Instructors asking the club to give a talk to them on what it's like to be a cyclist on the roads of Banbury and how we interact with drivers.

Paul Dean went to their June meeting and gave a presentation about the club, its history, the events we put on, when club rides and races are held and what a learner driver could expect to encounter. It was rather disconcerting to be told when presenting slides on the most significant risk, the "close pass" that both its name and nature are not taught to the instructors let alone the pupils in spite of local and national police initiatives.

So it was a good opportunity to explain how to pass people on bikes and as you can imagine the emotive issue of riding two-abreast was raised giving Paul the opportunity to explain why we ride like that (our safety). Being able to explain cycling to those who teach the drivers of tomorrow will hopefully make the roads that we share with them a safer experience for all.

Bike Maintenance

Members Barry Duplock and Mike Gillett recently held another bike maintenance workshop, using the community room at the Waitrose store as a location.

The goal of the sessions (more will follow) is to give club members the skills and confidence to perform simple bike maintenance tasks that will help to reduce mechanical issues before they become a problem out on the road.

They will be doing another course soon which will be advertised on Facebook.

Tour de France 6th-28 July

It's that time of the year again, with the greatest road race in the world running throughout most of July. This year's event starts in Bruxelles, but from Stage 3 it will be entirely on French soil. The 21 stages comprise; 7 flat stages, 5 hilly stages, 7 mountain stages and 5 mountain-top finishes, 1 individual time-trial stage, 1 team time-trial stage and 2 rest days.

Live TV coverage will again be on Eurosport and ITV4, with both channels also offering evening highlight programmes.

For further information on all the stages and teams, go to the link below.

Summer Sizzler

Ila Pearson has kindly organised the summer BBQ, this year it will be held on Sunday August 18th at The Bell Inn, Great Bourton from midday to 3pm.

It's open to members and their families, priced at £10 per adult with children getting a 2 for 1 discount. Rumour has it there's a rather special birthday that day too for one of the club members which will need celebrating.

An event has been created in the club's Facebook group, please respond there if you are interested in going.

Pilates for Cyclists - an update

Another pilates session was held in June, this time at the Community Room in the new Waitrose store. It was attended by 8 members, but to make it viable, we really need a minimum of 10 to attend. It has therefore been decided, with summer now upon us, to cancel the July session and start again in October.

The interest is clearly there, so please help and support Kate Latham when the sessions are relaunched in the autumn.

2019 Time Trial season and calendar

The start of this month sees us now past the halfway point of our Wednesday night TT season and what better way to celebrate this than a picture of our Race and TT Secretaries at a TT start. Three of the club's main trophies have already been won, the Friswell Cup - Tobias Wiesand, Manners Cup - Mery Wolke and Edmunds Cup - Simon Bull. Still to come we have the Russell Memorial Bowl on 3rd July and the season ending Durran Cup Hill climb, this time on Saturday 7th September.

Will Davey and Naomi de Pennington both set new course records on the hilly time trial which climbs Edge Hill twice.

Also coming up, we have our second 2-up TT on 14th August, the club Open 10 on the last day of August and the Leyden Plaque Interclub event on 1st September.

Please check the marshals rota list below to see whether it's your turn  and contact Oli Wright via the link below if you need to make a change.

Open Time Trial

Entries are now open on the CTT website for the club's Open 10 mile Time Trial which takes place on Saturday 31 August on the K4/10W course from Warmington to Gaydon and back

We'd like to get as many members as possible racing for their club on what is a sporting course which starts with the very fast descent of Warmington Hill (don't worry, the race finishes before having to climb back up it!).

As always with Open events, there is no "on the day" entry, pre-entry is mandatory which will close two weeks before the race.
