WHO WOULDN'T SEEK VALIDATION AND POSITIVE REWARDS FOR A JOB WELL DONE?
|
Reward based training works with horses, dogs, cats, fish, giraffes, zebras, hippos, monkeys AND people.
As much as possible, I choose to use positive reinforcement, a sound marker and food as reinforcers and rewards for repeating desired behaviors and here's why.
It's instinctual. Starting with the first time a foal nurses, it's both physical nourishment and emotional bonding. Food becomes the vehicle for love and life.
The food reinforces bonding each time it's given and received. This process is reinforced by chemical releases, including endorphins - the body's natural morphine-like chemicals.
This is why food rewards, given in small amounts, reinforce desired behaviors and cause the animal or human to want to repeat the behavior.
Animals, including most humans, will bond to any source of food rewards.
Make every experience with your horse a training one. Treats reward both emotionally and physically, so they are good for developing and maintaining bonds.
The attitude and validation of a 'job well done', along with the addition of positive reinforcement and a sound marker in our training, daily handling and interactions, has strengthened my relationships with my horses, treat pouch or not.

For me, it's impossible to offer my horses anything but autonomy, choice and voice. If I create good questions, accept their mind and body answers and responses, our relationship strengthens and our partnership grows.
I can help you create the relationship of your dreams with your horse.
