On 29th March 1981 British runner Joyce Smith won the first London Marathon in 2:29:57. She won it again in 1982, aged 44, setting a new British record. Smith is the oldest woman to have won the race. She competed in the first women's Olympic Marathon in Los Angeles in 1984, finishing 11th.

Josie Waller started running at 62 and became a British and World Masters record holder. She ran marathons in many countries and in 1992, became the first v70 woman to run a marathon in under 4 hours. She carried on running into her 80s and died in December aged 98.
