Welcome to the HAUS Blatt!

It’s summertime! We are taking a moment to reflect on an exciting first half of the year—filled with events, alumni gatherings, and inspiring visits from Heidelberg.

Looking ahead, we are especially excited to invite you to our 17th HAUS National Meeting, taking place this year in early October in the city of Chicago.

News from Universität Heidelberg

Successful With Three Applications for Clusters of Excellence

Heidelberg University has been successful with three applications in the Cluster of Excellence funding line. The existing cluster 3DMM2O (3D Matter Made to Order) will receive further funding and with SynthImmune (Engineering Immune Function with Synthetic Biology) and GreenRobust (Understanding Robustness in Plants from Molecules to Ecosystems) two new initiatives have also been selected for a seven-year funding period. New Master Program in 2025/26: Mathematics of Machine Learning and Data Science

Laying the mathematical and methodological foundations to enable future generations of mathematicians to continue developing machine learning and scientific data analysis – that is the purpose of a new research-oriented master program at Heidelberg University. The program is taught in English and is starting in the 2025/2026 winter semester. Read more here.

Ruperto Carola Lecture Series

The Ruperto Carola Lecture Series “1945: Epochal Threshold and Experiential Space”, with which Heidelberg University remembers the end of the war in Europe 80 years ago, i.e. the historical turning point on 8 May 1945, is taking place this summer semester. Save the Date for 30 Years of HAI

July 24-26, 2026 in Heidelberg

Celebrate 30 years of HAI with us—save the date and come to Heidelberg for our HAUS National Meeting on the beautiful Neckar River.

HAI’s Mentoring Program

The mentoring program has gained two new mentors from the United States: Roland Fürst in New York, NY and Berk Aykut in Durham, NC. Mentors are current and former students, employees and researchers at Heidelberg University who have gained vital experience in many areas of life and want to share it with other members of the HAI network. Mentors support, motivate, and inspire those looking for advice and a solution to diverse problems. All registered HAI-members have access to the list of mentors on the online platform HAInet. There you will find individual profiles of the mentors as well as the option to contact one or more of them with your questions. You can find more information here.

Heidelberg Talks Online

Heidelberg Talks Online are offered on a regular basis on a wide range of topics from medicine and psychology to philosophy, literature, politics or history to natural sciences or environmental issues.

Recently Dr, Pamela Karimi, Associate Professor of History of Art and Architecture at Cornell University offered insights into Woman, Art, Freedom: Artists and Street Politics in Iran. You can find future talks here.

News from HAUS

HAUS Chapter Activities

The New York, Washington, DC, North Carolina, Chicago, San Francisco/Northern California and Heidelberg Chapters got together in winter and spring! Great to see so much networking in so many regions! Thank you to our current HAUS leadership team and chapter chairs!

The year kicked off with New Year’s receptions in San Francisco and New York in collaboration with the DWIH San Francisco and the German Consulate New York. New Yorkers also welcomed Vice Rector Marc-Philippe Weller and Law Students at a Happy Hour in Manhattan.

The Chicago Chapter gathered in February at Himmel's and brainstormed locations for the National Meeting. Thank you!

The DC Chapter participated in the Networking Reception celebrating DAAD’s centennial at the German Historical Institute in Washington. The President of DAAD, Professor Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee, was in attendance.

The new North Carolina Chapter met in late March for a gathering at The Top of the Hill in Chapel Hill, NC.

The Northern California Chapter met in Berkeley at Jupiter for a casual gathering on the occasion of the Falling Walls Lab 2025.

The Heidelberg Chapter organized at meet up in early May at Jil Rooftop Drink & Dine.

Our Virtual Kaffeeklatsch took us on a delightful Heidelberg city tour in February, followed by a relaxed evening of conversation auf Deutsch in early June. Both events sparked great interest — and we are soon planning the next one!

HAUS Alumni News

Congratulations to Dr. David M. Goldenberg for receiving the Benedict Cassen Prize 2024 as a leading expert in the field of radio-immunotherapy. Read more here.

Congratulations to HAUS President Kathleen Lance for receiving an Award of Appreciation from Rektorin Prof. Dr. Frauke Melchior during her visit in New York for Kathleen’s many years of service to HAUS.

Congratulations to Stephanie Cabell for her retirement after 37+ years of service with the U.S. Departments of Labor and State.

Thanks to Clark McCombe and Beverly Ortiz McCombe the Heidelberg Center for American Studies is currently hosting the exhibit “1945: Leonard McCombe – Aftermath of War” featuring shots from 1944 to 1946 which Leonard McCombe took in Normandy, in Paris, Berlin and Warsaw! Clark and Beverly made the photos available to Heidelberg University for this exhibit. Read more here.

HAUS Scholarships

We are proud to work together with alumni to support study and learning at Heidelberg University for students. Thank you to everyone who helps to make the HAUS Scholarships possible!

The HAUS Scholarships are supported entirely by the HAUS community and demonstrate our continued commitment to providing the opportunity to experience Ruperto Carola. For the upcoming winter semester, HAUS Scholarships have been awarded to three students to study on the Master’s level in Heidelberg.

Our HAUS Summer School Scholarship for German Language and Culture was awarded to Naa Adua Annan, Addison Baker, Deniz Beskok, and Zoe Crowett. We wish them a great time in Heidelberg in August.

We are pleased to share that the HAUS Summer School Scholarship is supported in part by the newly established Stuhlmuller Family Fund, created in honor of Nicholas J. Stuhlmuller.

The Amirana Scholarships provides financial aid to international students from low- and middle-income countries of the Global South. Thanks to your donations we can support several students per year.

News from the New York Office

We enjoyed a visit from Heidelberg in April: Rektorin Prof. Dr. Frauke Melchior.

During her visit to New York, Frauke Melchior met with the HUA team and other partners in the German House, such as the Consul General Till Knorn to discuss the current challenges and opportunities in transatlantic cooperation. Another highlight was a Meet and Greet with HAUS members and friends in the restaurant on the 23rd floor of the German House. In her speech, the Rector emphasized the important role of alumni for Heidelberg University and provided information on current developments at the university.

We also invited research alumni, postdocs, and other interested parties to a breakfast roundtable on current developments in the higher education landscape at the American Council on Germany (ACG) in Midtown Manhattan. This roundtable discussion with the Rector was met with great interest and was moderated by alumnus Dr. Steven Sokol, President of the ACG.

We also enjoyed a visit by Prorektor Prof. Dr. Marc-Philippe Weller and Heidelberg law students at the occasion of their Premoot at Fordham University earlier this year.

Scholarships for Teachers of German

The International Summer School for German Language and Culture at Heidelberg University also offers a continuing education course for teachers of German who are not native speakers. In August, Andrea Schmidt, Alexis Smith, and Elizabeth Snyder will participate in the course in Heidelberg thanks to our cooperation with the American Association of Teachers of German. We are grateful for the generous funding provided by Heidelberg University and the German-American Scholarship Association.

Max Kade Visiting Professorship

We are grateful to the Max-Kade-Foundation for supporting a visiting professorship in Heidelberg for many years. This summer 2025 Dr. Ted Beatty, Professor of History and Global Affairs, Keough School of Global Affairs, University of Notre Dame will be hosted by the Heidelberg Center for American Studies (HCA).

Recent visiting professors were: Prof. David Gutman, Donald O. Schnuck Family Professor and Director of the Washington University Neurofibromatosis Center at Washington University in Saint Louis, MO (2024); Prof. Wenwen Li, Professor of the Department of Geographic Information Science and Director of the Cyberinfrastructure and Computational Intelligence Lab at Arizona State University (2023) and Prof. David Canning from the Department of Global Health and Population at the T.H. Chan School of Public Health at Harvard University (2022).
