Dear USET/USET SPF Family,
The Department of the Interior (DOI) has issued a Dear Tribal Leader Letter announcing Tribal consultations on Secretarial Order 3404, Declaring “Squaw” a Derogatory Term and Implementing Procedures to Remove the Term from Federal Usage (S.O. 3404). Issued by Secretary Deb Haaland on November 19, 2021, S.O. 3404 establishes a Derogatory Geographic Names Task Force (Task Force) to review and replace names for 665 geographic features that are currently identified by a derogatory name. The Task Force is welcoming comments on proposed replacement names developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for these geographic features, as well as any additional name recommendations.
Information on the upcoming Tribal consultations are as follows—
Date/Time: Monday, March 21, 2022 from 12:00pm to 2:00pm MT
Date/Time: Tuesday, March 22, 2022 from 11:00am to 1:00pm PT
Date/Time: Wednesday, March 23, 2022 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm ET

Written comments on the proposed replacement names, or recommendations for additional replacement names, are due by 11:59pm on April 24, 2022 and can be submitted to taskforce_consultation@ios.doi.gov. Comments should reference the Feature ID (FID) located in the second column (Column B) of the S.O. 3404 Candidate Names document.
