Dear Unit 1 Members,
As you may know, we submitted our intent to bargain near the end of May and are working on getting some initial bargaining dates set up with the Employer.
Our bargaining team is:
Ariel Becherer, VP Unit 1 & Lead Negotiator
Ryan Conrad, President
Maria Vorobeva, VP Internal
Emily Paquette-Leahy, Rank and File Member
Sophie Birks, Rank and File Member
Hamid Reza Aghamiri, Rank and File Member
Megan Linton, Alternate Rank and File Member
A union is its members, and the bargaining team will present proposals to the employer based on members’ needs and priorities.
Based on the Membership Surveys this past Fall and Winter terms, ongoing sector research, one-on-one and group discussions with Members, and Member-reported issues, the Membership-driven priorities for this bargaining round are as follows:
Pay Raise & Protections
Improved Health Benefits
Workload Improvements
Job Security & Conditions
Given the socio-political and economic realities we’re currently facing, this will be a tough round of bargaining and in order to secure wins on these priorities and avoid concessions, you (the Membership) will need to be actively engaged and ready to hold Carleton accountable and fight for your rights. A Union is only as strong as its Membership.
This summer, the mobilization committee needs more member help, preparing communications materials, such as posters, flyers and videos. To get involved, come to mobilization committee (meets mondays, all members welcome), or contact vp.unit1@cupe4600.ca
We will need member engagement far more in the fall, especially bargaining observers and tabling. If you only have one afternoon in September to help, come watch bargaining, or sign up for a tabling session. We will be sending sign-up sheets soon for members who want to help, but have less capacity.
We’ll be updating our website’s bargaining page frequently once we’re actively in bargaining, so make sure to check it regularly in the coming months. At the bottom of the page are a number of resources that will help you become familiar with the bargaining process.

Stay tuned!
In Solidarity, Ariel Becherer, VP Unit 1
