One of my favorite recurring travel moments is watching the kilometers or miles per hour indicator on a high-speed train, especially as it accelerates.
The ride is as smooth as glass, and in the countryside there are not many visual markers against which you might gauge your relative speed. You might never guess that you were traveling almost 200 miles per hour, borne out by the fact that you can reach Paris from Zurich in only four hours. (Or that whole breakfast in London, lunch in Paris thing!)
This fascination with transportation extends to planespotting as well. On a regular day, I might poke around FlightAware, checking on a flight for a client or evaluating the on-time performance. The detailed data is delightful for a travel dork like yours truly.
The Best Airport Layover?
But my favorite use of that data is to match it up with planes that I might see taxi, takeoff, or land right in front of my window at an airport hotel room. I am still awestruck by the mere feat of the biggest jets simply leaving terra firma.
Most major airports have at least one hotel on site, sometimes even attached to a terminal. If you've got a long layover, a runway view room is not only convenient but can be a terrific way to relax (never fear, it's soundproofed) and enjoy a unique view if you have a long connection between flights.
Some of the most engaging runway view rooms and suites can be found at New York JFK, Atlanta, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Melbourne, Vancouver, Singapore, Los Angeles, and Paris.
Joining us for the fabulous Impressions of the Seine and Paris trip in August 2022? Why not fly over a day early and try some planespotting at Charles de Gaulle?
No Need to Leave Town! Or a Unique Getaway?
But why wait till you're traveling internationally to enjoy the panoramic vista showcasing the sheer engineering marvel that is a jet plane taking off, and imagining (or knowing) where it may be headed? If you reside in a city with a busy airport, what a fun overnight escape!
If you'd like to explore the idea of a staycation, an easy getaway, or a way to really ramp up a long layover on your next trip, please reach out anytime. Mon Voyage can help you secure the best runway view room, near or far.
If you live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, please mark your calendar for the afternoon and evening of Saturday, September 18th and the morning of Sunday, September 19th.
I will be hosting a runway view open house for clients at the DFW Grand Hyatt (Terminal D) for some travel chat, planespotting, and light refreshment. Look for details in early September, because I'm off the Danube for now!
P.S. Next time: the allure and pleasure of wine travel.
