WorkSafeNB is pleased to share starting July 1, 2024, wage-loss benefits for all injured workers will increase from 85% to 90% of net earnings, providing increased financial security as they recover from a workplace injury or illness. These historic benefit improvements, which include an increase in loss of earnings benefits and adjustments to maximum annual earnings, mark a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to the well-being of our province's workforce.

Benefit improvements mark a significant milestone in our ongoing journey to support the workforce of New Brunswick, ensuring injured workers receive the care and financial stability they deserve, while employers are provided stable and competitive assessment rates. Our goal is to create an environment where both workers and employers feel supported.

The Government of New Brunswick introduced changes to the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act on June 7. While most changes are administrative in nature, two have larger implications for New Brunswick workplaces.

New Brunswick’s First Aid Regulation was recently amended to help harmonize it with national standards for workplace first aid training. CSA Z1220-17 “First aid kits for the workplace” requires that a workplace first aid kit appropriate to the workplace be readily accessible to all workers. "Readily accessible" is defined as capable of being reached quickly and safely, without the use of tools, for the purposes of use or maintenance.

To ensure workplace first aid kits are readily accessible to all workers and that the configurations of workplaces can be accommodated, workplace first aid kits of different sizes (small, medium, and large) may be used in various combinations.

Drowning is a leading cause of death in Canada. Being able to swim is not enough to protect yourself in every situation. Wearing a life jacket or personal flotation device is your best defence against drowning. Don't leave home without this summer's hottest accessory. Always wear your lifejacket.

Protect your skin, so it will protect you. When the UV index is 3 or higher, apply sunscreen. Use sunscreen labelled “broad spectrum,” “water resistant, or “sport,” with an SPF of at least 30. Remember to use lip balm with a similar SPF. Sunscreen should be used in addition to cover-up clothing, not in place of it.

To assist, we've created a webpage and launched a social media awareness campaign. Additionally, we've produced informational pamphlets available in multiple languages, including: Arabic, English, French, Korean, Mandarin, Punjabi, Spanish, Tagalog, Ukrainian and Vietnamese.

WorkSafeNB knows how vital agriculture is to New Brunswick’s economy. We also know that agriculture can be a high-risk industry.

We want to ensure farmers have the information and resources they need to improve safety for themselves and their workers. We remind anyone who works in the agriculture industry to pay special attention to silo safety, machine safeguarding and monthly inspections.

WorkSafeNB developed resources to help farmers and farm workers stay healthy and safe.

How you dispose of waste may impact the health and safety of waste collection workers. Hazardous materials do not belong in household garbage.

Most regions have household hazardous waste depots. If you’re unsure of what garbage is hazardous, or how to safely dispose of hazardous waste, check with your regional solid waste organization or regional service commission.

WorkSafeNB's health and safety officers and occupational hygienists are given legislative authority to write orders under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, to improve safety and prevent accidents in New Brunswick workplaces.

When these orders are not complied with, or when an accident has taken place as a result of a violation of the Act and/or its regulations, WorkSafeNB may recommend charges to the Department of Justice.
