Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) are both retroviruses. Unlike many other viruses that infect cells and then destroy them, FeLV or FIV enters certain cells in a cat’s body and altar the cells’ genetic characteristics, and turn cells into little virus factories. This process takes time, cats may be infected for many years before becoming clinically ill. This allows FeLV to become inactive in some cats, making disease transmission and prognosis difficult to predict.

Certain dogs may be more susceptible than others to developing environmentally associated cancers.

This is according to a new Morris Animal Foundation-funded study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison), which explores how exposure to common environmental chemicals and individual genetic differences in response to them can affect a dog’s risk of developing cancer.

Researchers hope the findings will allow veterinarians to create unique health plans for canines, including possible avoidance and dietary restrictions, to help prevent cancer. Read more..
