What People Do On Father's Day?
Father's Day is an occasion to mark and celebrate the contribution that your own father has made to your life. Many people send or give cards or gifts to their fathers. Common Father's Day gifts include sports items or clothing, electronic gadgets, outdoor cooking supplies and tools for household maintenance.
Father's Day is a relatively modern holiday so different families have a range of traditions. These can range from a simple phone call or greetings card to large parties honoring all of the 'father' figures in a particular extended family. Father figures can include fathers, step-fathers, fathers-in-law, grandfathers and great-grandfathers and even other male relatives. In the days and weeks before Father's Day, many schools and Sunday schools help their pupils to prepare a handmade card or small gift for their fathers.
Public Life
Father's Day is not a federal holiday. Organizations, businesses and stores are open or closed, just as they are on any other Sunday in the year. Public transit systems run to their normal Sunday schedules. Restaurants may be busier than usual, as some people take their fathers out for a treat.
Background and symbols
There are a range of events, which may have inspired the idea of Father's Day. One of these was the start of the Mother's Day tradition in the first decade of the 20th century. Another was a memorial service held in 1908 for a large group of men, many of them fathers, who were killed in a mining accident in Monongah, West Virginia in December 1907.
A woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was an influential figure in the establishment of Father's Day. Her father raised six children by himself after the death of their mother. This was uncommon at that time, as many widowers placed their children in the care of others or quickly married again.
Sonora was inspired by the work of Anna Jarvis, who had pushed for Mother's Day celebrations. Sonora felt that her father deserved recognition for what he had done. The first time Father's Day was held in June was in 1910. Father's Day was officially recognized as a holiday in 1972 by President Nixon.

Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Healed by Faith?”
Aim: Examine
the
nature of faith involved in the healings of the woman and the girl in
this passage,
Sense
the
power of God to bring life and healing to our loved ones, and Rejoice
in
the healing power of God as manifested in our own lives.
Background: Matthew
9:18-26; Mark 5:21-43; Luke 8:40-56
Bible Lesson:
Matthew 9:18-26
Memory
Verses:
Jesus
turned around, and when he saw her he said, "Daughter, be
encouraged! Your faith has made you well." And the woman was
healed at that moment. Matthew 9:22 NLT
Some
Highlights:
-
Matthew
Chapter 9 records a number of miraculous healings performed by
Jesus. It also records throngs following him as he travels in
the region. Even his detractors, the Pharisees, followed Him not to
receive healing, but to find ways to trap Jesus with insincere
questions or to seek any so-called religious violations that they
could use to ultimately take His life. Not only did Jesus heal the
sick, but He also taught the Good News of the Gospel wherever He
went. Our Study, Matthew 9:18-26, opens with Jarius, a synagogue
official interrupting Jesus’ in the midst of His Teaching.
-
Jarius
comes to Jesus in desperation, his daughter has died and in faith he
believes that Jesus can raise her from the dead by laying on His
hands on her. Parents who have experienced the tragic and heart breaking
death of a child feel a sorrow that is not easily comforted for it
is expected that death is for the old and not for the young and
youthful.
-
Jesus
stops His teaching to minister to this grieving father. He and his
disciples almost immediately start the journey to Jarius’ home
where the young girl’s body lies.
-
On
their way to Jarius’ home, an unnamed woman who had experienced an
issue of blood for twelve long years made her way through the throng
of followers to be healed by just touching the hem of Jesus’
garment. Anyone with an issue of blood was considered religiously
and ceremonially unclean meaning that they could not participate in
Jewish worship. Jewish priests were prohibited from coming in
contact with anyone with a blood disease because they too would
become unclean themselves; therefore, disqualifying them from
performing priestly duties until they could be ceremonially
cleansed. So, this woman took a big risk coming into a crowd and
seeking to touch even the hem of Jesus’ garment. However, she
believed that if she could touch but the hem of Jesus’ garment she
would be healed and perhaps she could do this and not even be
detected.
-
In
the Gospel according to Mark, which also records this event, we
learn that Jesus asks the disciples, who touched Him. The disciples
response was that the crowd was so large and everybody is touching
everybody and there was no way to discern a single touch. But Jesus
explains that there was a specific touch that resulted in His power
being absorbed by someone in need. The woman recognized that her touch
was not undetected so she confessed that she had touched Him with the faith that she would be healed from a longtime chronic disease and with that touch she was indeed healed. Jesus divinely knowing
everything, first comforted her by addressing her as “Daughter”
and announced that her faith in Him had made her whole. Now she
could rejoin society and no longer be separated and ostracized
because of her former condition.
-
Upon
arriving at Jarius’ home, they encountered the normal professional
mourners performing the customary rituals after a death. Jesus
commands these mourners to leave and declared that the girl was not
dead but just asleep. The professional mourns laughed and mocked
Jesus and had to be expelled from the house.
-
Jesus
goes to where the girl’s body lies and takes her hand in His hand
and gently raises her and life re-enters her body and she is raised
from the dead.
-
As
you can imagine, news of Jesus raising the young girl from the dead
travelled through out the region and this miracle was added to other
accounts of Jesus’ many other miraculous actions.
-
Jesus’
movements fulfilled Isaiah 61:1-2 NLT “The Spirit of the
Sovereign LORD is upon me, for the LORD has anointed me to bring
good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted
and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be
freed. 2 He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the
LORD's favor has come, and with it, the day of God's anger against
their enemies.”
Take
Aways:
-
Faith,
which is a gift from God, is needed to experience the miraculous
power of God’s Healing.
-
As
in this passage, God’s grace and mercy is available to the
so-called important and connected as represented by Jarius as
well as to those who seem unimportant and disconnected like the
unnamed women who had spent all that she had seeking healing from a
twelve year long blood disease.
-
Our
Heavenly Father cares for us and knows all of our needs.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Give
all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” 1 Peter
5:7 NLT
“Now
faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things
not seen.” Hebrews 11:1 NKJV
“For
by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of
yourselves; [it is] the gift of God,” Ephesians 2:8 NKJV
“But
without faith [it is] impossible to please [Him], for he who comes to
God must believe that He is, and [that] He is a rewarder of those who
diligently seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6 NKJV
“So
the Lord said, "If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say
to this mulberry tree, 'Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in
the sea,' and it would obey you.” Luke 17:6 NKJV
“Then
He touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith let it
be to you." And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned
them, saying, "See [that] no one knows [it]."”Matthew
9:29-30 NKJV

211 New COVID-19 Cases & 2 Deaths Reported in Kentucky for
June 18, 2021
(21 New Cases in Fayette County)
As millions receive the COVID-19 vaccines, it is still important and necessary to continue to practice the CDC and Kentucky Governor's Guidance and Mandates. The distribution and administration of the vaccines to millions of people continues as a high priority for the Biden Administration with July 4th as a milestone objective for families whose members have been fully vaccinated to have small celebration gatherings. Meanwhile we must stay steadfast, vigilant and disciplined in the adherence of safe practices as provided by the CDC and the Kentucky Governor's Health advice in light of the continued spread of the virus. Click CDC VACCINE INFORMATION for some information from the CDC on the COVID-19 vaccines.
- Get a flu vaccination as soon as possible but getting it any time in the flu season is beneficial. VaccineFinderexternal icon to find out where to get vaccinated near you.
- Avoid close contact with those who are sick, maintain at least 6 feet from others who are not from your household,
- Wear face masks when in public (Mandatory in Kentucky and is being extended on a 30 day basis until the spread is under control),
- Wash your hands frequently,
- Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, and leave home only when absolutely necessary.
