INCLUSION
Dance is for everybody.
Dance could possibly be one of the most universal languages that exist. As a human, you have a right to use this language. Simply for that reason.
We believe dance is meant to bring people together and be a vehicle for connection. Whatever your background, culture, age, race, sex, gender identity, sexuality, religion, ability... If you want to dance, you should dance. And we are here to support you.
Inclusive practices often show up as "small gestures" that have a BIG IMPACT, and here are some that we can observe in our community:
- Senior students (grade 3 and above) discussing inclusive language in the waiting room and correct ways to use it.
- Students showing interest in their peers' culture when they explain a significant holiday is coming up.
- When asked to be in groups, no one is left behind. If numbers don't add up to all have an equal amount, students have shown initiative to always include an extra team member.
- Toilet signs depict what they are and not who they are for, so everyone can use the facilities based on their needs.
- Multiple staff members are RhythmWorks trained teachers, offering private lessons to make dance accessible to people with special needs and learning differences and creating a pathway to transition to mainstream classes (if that's the desired outcome).
- Our student body shows how proudly diverse we are across all ages.
